Rapist sues jail for pounds 50,000 over lack of exercise; Prisoner says human rights were breached.

APRISONER serving life for raping a pregnant teenage girl has launched a claim for pounds 50,000 in damages from a North East jail - for not allowing him enough outdoor exercise.

Leslie Malcolm, who is serving his second sentence for rape, launched his bid against HMP HMP - hybrid multiprocessing  Frankland in County Durham “Durham county” redirects here. For other uses, see Durham County.

County Durham is a county in north-east England. It can be used to refer to 4 different entities:
  • the historic County of Durham
  • the administrative county of Durham
 at the High Court yesterday.

He is demanding pounds 50,000 because he claims he was only allowed 30 minutes of open-air exercise on each of the 158 days he served in the North E ast jail.

He says that his rights under Article 8 of the European Convention European Convention Europe nEuropäische(r) Konvent m, EU-Konvent m  of Human Rights have been breached.

Malcolm, who was jailed for life in 1996 for the attack on an 18-year-old girl who was 10 weeks pregnant, is receiving legal aid to take his battle to court.

He says that the lack of open-air exercise meant that there was "interference with his psychological integrity" which caused him "increased stress and feelings of indignity in·dig·ni·ty
