in a white sheet. Chief Supt Smith said: "Among the crowd was one young lady that stood out. She was staggering and appeared drunk.

"She really did stand out as being vulnerable and I had some concerns about her and wanted to check she was OK.

"As I got out of the police car, a fight broke out behind her, and my first response was to deal with that.

When I turned round the young lady had moved and I couldn't see her.

"I scanned the area around Mosley Street and, at roughly at the same time, a taxi driver got out of his taxi and pointed at a VW Passat and said 'that's not a taxi and he has just picked up a young lady'."

When Chief Supt Smith approached the car, he found Beal at the wheel. Prosecutors claim Beal kidnapped the girl with intent to commit a sexual offence in February this year.

Chief Supt Smith said he became suspicious when he quizzed Beal as to what was going on.

He said: "I asked if he knew her and he said no. I asked if he was a taxi and he said no. I asked why the girl was in the rear and he said 'because I know how difficult it is to try to walk home when you are drunk'.

"I was not satisfied in relation to what he said and I was concerned about the reason the lady was in the car."

Chief Supt Smith called for other officers in the city centre and Beal was arrested.
