Rapid Prototyping Benefits.

Of the two panel discussions hosted by the Pattern and Foundry Tooling Div., one concentrated on the merits on the merits adj. referring to a judgment, decision or ruling of a court based upon the facts presented in evidence and the law applied to that evidence. A judge decides a case "on the merits" when he/she bases the decision on the fundamental issues and considers  of using rapid prototyping Building a part one layer at a time using a method of additive fabrication such as 3D printing. Such parts are used for concept modeling to determine if the product design meets the customer's expectations. .

In that discussion, three panelists all agreed that the initial benefit that rapid prototyping offers is speed. "If the customer is not integrated in time compression, he won't be looking at the rapid prototyping method," said L. Andre, Solidiform, Inc. If end-deliverability is the concern then rapid prototyping is a better, faster, cheaper way to make castings, but it doesn't mean it costs less money to do, he added. Under those circumstances, however, most customers are happy to pay the premium.

Rapid prototyping gives the foundry the ability to get complex prototypes back to the customers' hands quickly to determine shrink rates and develop difficult gating systems, according to according to

. "It's one more tool in a tool chest that allows a designer to get more creative," he said.

Talking about what else foundries can do to capitalize on rapid prototyping technologies, Andre cautioned that whatever expense is put forth toward solid modeling software, it should be matched by the same investment in training to effectively use it.

Rapid prototyping can be used for any type of casting process, and the process improvements have rewritten the definition of "prototype," even now delivering production quantities on some parts. "Somethings we do seem ridiculous to the conventional patternmaker pat·tern·mak·er also pattern maker

. It's not ridiculous when the customer is buying time-compression," said Andre.

"Most foundries have CAD inhouse now. From there, they can determine what's the best method and build the pattern," said Krook.

Since having entered into rapid prototyping, Andre reported that sales have doubled with the same number of employees. "We are delivering castings, but we are selling time-compression," he added.

The other panel discussed present and future requirements for data exchange.
