Ramtron Ships First FRAM Memory Samples From Japan-Based Foundry; Event marks first second-source shipments of next generation nonvolatile memories.

COLORADO SPRINGS Colorado Springs, city (1990 pop. 281,140), seat of El Paso co., central Colo., on Monument and Fountain creeks, at the foot of Pikes Peak; inc. 1886. It is a year-round resort and a booming military, technological, and commercial city. , Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 22, 1997--Ramtron International Corporation (Nasdaq:RMTR RMTR Redesigned Missile Tracking Radar ) announced today the availability of first commercial 16 kilobit (thousand bits). For technical specifications, it refers to 1,024 bits. In general usage, it typically refers to an even one thousand bits (see kilo). Also Kb, Kbit and K-bit. See space/time.

(unit) kilobit - 2^10 = 1024 bits of storage (1 Kb).

The 16K FRAM is the first product in a family of low-density FRAM products that Rohm is scheduled to manufacture at its facility in Japan. Until now, Ramtron has been the sole manufacturer of low-density FRAM products which it has sold on a limited basis since 1992. The addition of new foundries is expected to increase Ramtron's ability to grow its FRAM product sales and expand the FRAM market as a whole.

Rohm's addition to the FRAM manufacturing lineup proves that our revolutionary FRAM memory can be produced outside of Ramtron at a high quality manufacturer. A new phase in Ramtron's development has begun and we look forward to growing our company as Rohm and each of our other partners commence commercial manufacturing."

The company has begun shipping the product samples to a select group of existing customers for application in utility meters, postal meters, and security systems. Ramtron expects to begin receiving volume quantities of the 16K FRAM from Rohm's foundry during the first quarter of 1998.

Ramtron has FRAM licensing and manufacturing agreements with top semiconductor producers including Hitachi, Rohm, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. The agreements provide for royalty considerations, and manufacturing capacity that can be utilized by Ramtron to develop its own product business. The company also has licensing and/or development agreements with Samsung and SGS-Thomson. Ferroelectric random access memory (storage) Ferroelectric Random Access Memory - (FRAM) A type of non-volatile read/write random access semiconductor memory. FRAM combines the advantages of SRAM - writing is roughly as fast as reading, and EPROM - non-volatility and in-circuit programmability.  (FRAM) is a new generation, high-performance memory developed and patented by Ramtron that saves data without power.
