The new FRAM chips are designed for use in a wide variety of consumer and industrial applications, including video games, watt-hour meters, industrial flow meters, satellite receivers, modems and motor controls, among others, and are immediately available with densities ranging from 4 kilobits (4k) to 16 kilobits (16k).

"The continuing expansion of our FRAM product line provides our customers with a full spectrum of low- and mid-density memory selections for most commercial and industrial applications," said Kerry Maletsky, Ramtron's FRAM product manager. "In addition, we have lowered our FRAM prices to maintain our competitive position with EEPROMs (electrically erasable e·ras·a·ble

 programmable read only memory)."

Ramtron added that by year-end 1995 it expects its ongoing work with Hitachi Ltd. of Japan to further expand the FRAM product family to include chips beginning with densities of 256 kilobits (256k). Hitachi Ltd., the Japanese electronics giant and a strategic partner with Ramtron, is pursuing development of a family of high-density FRAM memories.

Ramtron's new FRAM products are 1,000 times faster than the most common alternative non-volatile memory device and are ideal in applications where little board space is available and high-speed memory access is required. Like Ramtron's existing FRAM products, the new chips provide unequalled endurance, no write delay and low- power operation.

Ramtron's FRAM products are the first semiconductor memories based on proprietary ferroelectric Refers to a material that functions similarly to a ferromagnetic material in that it can be polarized into two states. The company's FRAM product family competes in the largest segment of the non-volatile semiconductor memory market -- a market In Stat Inc., a market research firm that tracks the semiconductor industry, estimates will grow to $5.4 billion by 1996.
