 RESISTANT TRANSGENIC BANANA PLANTS

Rahan Meristem has successfully completed a field trial that validates the complete resistance of banana plants to a wide range of pathogenic nematodes.

With a total production of approximately 60 million tons per year, banana and plantains have become major crops worldwide, exported from tropical countries to almost every part of the globe. Despite the economic importance of this crop, varietal improvement is limited to very few non-exportable types. As a result of its natural sterility, most banana varieties have yet to be genetically improved. However, advancements in genetic engineering are now opening new horizons for banana improvement.

Nematodes are considered one of the most destructive pathogens attacking bananas in all zones of production. Vegetative propagation, using infested in·fest

As a result, nematode resistance is considered to be a highly attractive attribute that is estimated to reduce growers' expenses by hundreds of millions of dollars every year.

Rahan Meristem is a world leader in banana biotechnology and has been involved in developing nematode resistant products for over six years.
