Radnet, Inc. Introduces WebShare 2.0, Raises the Bar for Web Groupware.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--January 13, 1997 --

Major New Version Offers Developers Over 300 New Features

Radnet, Inc. today introduced WebShare 2.0, a major new release of the first groupware development system designed from the outset for the Web and corporate Intranets. By enabling developers to quickly and inexpensively create open, secure collaborative Web applications for corporate Intranets, WebShare 2.0 advances the convergence of groupware applications with the open, standards-based development platform of the Web.

Incorporating more than 300 new features, WebShare 2.0 adds major new functionality, including replication support for mobile laptop use; integration of a full-fledged WYSIWYG application builder; client-side ActiveX and Java support; and enhanced security based on the SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) The leading security protocol on the Internet. Developed by Netscape, SSL is widely used to do two things: to validate the identity of a Web site and to create an encrypted connection for sending credit card and other personal data.  3.0 standard.

"WebShare 2.0 furthers our lead in the Web groupware applications market. With WebShare 2.0, Web groupware is truly ready for prime time," said Radnet President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. The WebShare 2.0 Server and Designer are now entering beta test A test of new or revised hardware or software that is performed by users at their facilities under normal operating conditions. Beta testing follows alpha testing. Vendors of packaged software often offer their customers the opportunity of beta testing new releases or versions, and the  with Radnet partners and customers and will be shipping in production by the end of Q1. A new port of the WebShare 2.0 Server for UNIX, initially supporting the Sun Solaris platform, will ship in Q2. In addition, WebShare supports integration with the popular Microsoft and Netscape server suites. WebShare for Microsoft BackOffice See BackOffice.  and WebShare for Netscape SuiteSpot are special configurations tuned expressly for BackOffice and SuiteSpot customers.

"Because we've built WebShare 2.0 based on customer feedback, WebShare developers will quickly and easily see the benefits of our new release," said Reed Sturtevant, chief technology officer at Radnet. "With the addition of replication, an exciting, integrated WYSIWYG application builder, and the unique ability to persistently store ActiveX and Java objects, WebShare is once again setting the pace for Web groupware functionality in the industry."

Other new features of WebShare 2.0 include enhanced security with SSL 3.0 support; a comprehensive object model that supports rich new development features; and Unicode support for international character sets.

"The Web is rapidly evolving from a simple communications model to a high-value application platform, with the help of products such as WebShare 2.0," said Geoffrey Bock Noun 1. bock - a very strong lager traditionally brewed in the fall and aged through the winter for consumption in the spring

"Radnet's approach fills a great need for the entrepreneurial companies that are shifting their strategic application development to their Web infrastructure. WebShare customers and developers have been able to build open collaborative Web applications of compelling value in very short time frames."

What's New in WebShare 2.0

Highlights of the new features and functionality of WebShare 2.0 include:

--WebShare Mobile "Personal Server" for Laptops - WebShare Mobile allows laptop users to run their groupware applications off-line and bi-directionally replicate when they reconnect to the network. Unlike simple database synchronization, off-line web browsing, or one-way caching (proxy server Also called a "proxy," it is a computer system or router that breaks the connection between sender and receiver. Functioning as a relay between client and server, proxy servers are used to help prevent an attacker from invading the private network. ) support found in other products, WebShare 2.0's Mobile software provides the robust replication needed for web applications. It provides the mobile user with a WebShare "personal server," by enabling the user to create a personal subset of the interactive WebShare application to work off-line.

WebShare Mobiles advanced features include the ability to "push" information to the mobile laptop including WebShare applications and all associated application files - including application updates, conflict resolution of documents that are modified on either WebShare Mobile or WebShare Server, and selective replication. WebShare Mobile maintains the security that is part of the WebShare server by limiting replication to those fields and records for which a user has permission to access. A WebShare application may also be configured so that it does not allow any replication to be performed;

--ActiveX/Java Integration on Clients - WebShare 2.0's support for ActiveX and Java on the client side offers customers a very unique capability. WebShare allows developers to integrate Active X controls or Java applets into their applications. Now, with WebShare 2.0 they can also persistently store the data that is associated with the control or applet. This allows them to easily leverage the large base of third-party ActiveX controls and Java applets in their WebShare applications. The relevant data that is needed by the control or applet is stored within the WebShare application. No other product on the market currently provides this capability.

Thus for the first time, a web applications environment can be used to build true compound document applications using client components from multiple sources. For example, if the developer embeds a spreadsheet amortization control on a WebShare application form, when the user changes the spreadsheet data, the results will be saved on the server and can be easily recalled when needed;

--WYSIWYG Application Builder - WebShare 2.0's new integrated visual application builder supports full WYSIWYG HTML HTML

 editing and direct access to WebShare application objects. For instance, a WebShare data field will have HTML properties integrated directly with application properties such as access control (security). The editor supports HTML 3.2 and the kind of drag-and-drop environment that today's developers expect. It also integrates the best WYSIWYG facilities for handling HTML forms and tables on the market, and automatically generates all the necessary SQL SQL

--SSL 3.0 Security Support - WebShare 2.0 supports SSL 3.0 for user authentication See authentication. , with full support for digital IDs for each user;

--Comprehensive Object Model - WebShare 2.0's full, collaborative application object model is accessible to WebShare scripts, providing rich new development facilities. This includes a greatly expanded set of WebShare application events and large set of built-in functions for the WebShare developer;

--UNIX Support - The WebShare 2.0 Server will be ported to UNIX. This will allow the server to run on high-end machines to scale up to larger numbers of users and larger databases. The first UNIX platform, to be available in Q2, will be Sun Solaris; and,

--Unicode / International Character Sets -- WebShare 2.0 now uses Unicode internally. This makes the engine ready to support international character sets for global applications. Radnet is developing a Japanese language Japanese language
