Radius announces ColorMatch Separation Lab; ColorMatch system makes ICC profile and separation table creation simple.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 23, 1997--Radius Inc. (NASDAQ NASDAQ
in full National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations

U.S. market for over-the-counter securities. Established in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), NASDAQ is an automated quotation system that reports on
:RDUS) today announced ColorMatch Separation Lab for the Macintosh and the Mac OS, an application designed to make producing color separations Separating a picture by colors in order to make negatives and plates for color printing. The four-color process requires four separations: cyan, magenta, yellow and black (CMYK). See OPI and DCS.  fast and easy using ColorSync or Adobe Photoshop See Photoshop. .

Separation Lab simplifies the task of generating custom output profiles and Adobe Photoshop separation tables by combining Radius' ColorMatch engine with pre-scanned color data. This gives color professionals custom device-matching, color separations and soft-proofing using Photoshop, ColorSync or any ICC-compliant color management system Software that translates the colors of an original image into the truest representation obtainable on the output device. Color management works from a profile of the output device, typically a digital printer or offset press, and works backward to the source of the material such as a  or application. Separation Lab is the first product to make custom profile generation fast and easy, enabling true color (1) Specifically, refers to 16,777,216 colors (24-bit color). See high color.

(2) Generically, refers to photo-realistic color (typically requires 24-bit color as a minimum).
management throughout the prepress production workflow.

"We are the leading supplier of professional display technology, and Separation Lab represents the next logical step in a suite of new ColorMatch products," said Mark Housley, president and COO for Radius. "Because Separation Lab lets users control the profile, Macintosh users can finally implement color management in an effective way."

While the standard ColorMatch profiles and Photoshop separation tables delivered as part of the PressView display system offer outstanding color separations and proofs, many users require a more customized approach to account for the idiosyncrasies associated with many output devices. This type of customization has involved generating ICC profiles or custom Photoshop tables which has been impractical for most users.

Radius Separation Lab makes profile and separation table customization simple by providing pre-scanned spectrophometric data called "ink models," generated from carefully researched color targets and thousands of measurements. This allows users to create custom output profiles and tables for specific devices without having to use expensive equipment or a lengthy measuring process because the bulk of the work has already been done.

Separation Lab is based on Radius' Perceptual Matching Technology (PMT See photomultiplier tube. ) which differentiates between viewing images on a display and reflective prints by factoring in the human element of color not of the white race; - commonly meaning, esp. in the United States, of negro blood, pure or mixed.

perception. Along with PMT, Separation Lab incorporates the sampled ink model data, and an easy-to-use interface for controlling out-of-gamut mapping, black-generation and total ink density to easily produce custom profiles and separation tables.

Separation Lab will ship with a number of ink models for the most popular output systems including SWOP offset coated and uncoated, 3M Matchprint, Fuji and Imation Rainbow. Additional ink models will be available for later purchase. Separation Lab is expected to ship in second quarter 1997 with a suggested retail price of $395.00.

In addition to announcing Separation Lab, Radius today also announced these two additions to the ColorMatch System. ColorMatch Daylight is a professional viewing station for color-calibrated viewing of a reference image and ColorMatch 3.0 profiles and separation tables featuring significant improvements in color separations. These products along with the other ColorMatch products give the user a complete environment for professional color separations and soft proofing Providing customers with a preview of printed output on screen rather than on paper. Soft proofing provides instant feedback and is useful when many color and content decisions still need to be finalized before a hard-copy proof is created. .
