Radio project--Media for Africa Women's Rights (MEWOR)/Projet radio--Medias pour les Droits de la Femme en Afrique (MEWOR).FEMNET is collaborating with FAHAMU (Networks for Social Justice) to carry out the Media for Women's Rights The effort to secure equal rights for women and to remove gender discrimination from laws, institutions, and behavioral patterns. The women's rights movement began in the nineteenth century with the demand by some women reformers for the right to vote, known as suffrage, and (MEWOR) Project to be implemented in 2 pilot regions of Africa--Eastern and Western Africa. The project aims to develop a series of radio programmes to create widespread awareness on the Africa Union Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People's Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa. The Protocol has been recognised as a continental legal framework for the protection of women's rights in Africa. Through this 3-year MEWOR project, FEMNET and FAHAMU propose to use communication as a key strategy, by developing two types of radio programmes. Firstly, a series of radio drama programmes, which will target local communities through community radio stations as well as cartoon strips targeting younger audiences will be developed. A regional consultative and planning meeting will be held in May 2007. The meeting will bring together media professionals in both community radio and select media houses as key partners for the project. The key objective is to forge a partnership, common understanding and commitment to the project goals.
