RadiSys announces EPC-43 compact Pentium processor-based computer for embedded multimedia, networking applications; On-board RadiSys EPM-1 embedded processor module offers upgradeability, long life.

HILLSBORO, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 29, 1997--RadiSys Corp. (NASDAQ NASDAQ
in full National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations

:RSYS) today announced the EPC-43(R) embedded computer with the RadiSys EPM-1 Pentium(a) processor-based Embedded Processor Module.

The EPC-43 is the first integrated computer that combines multimedia interfaces and powerful processing capabilities with a very small foot-print for embedded applications where space is at a premium, such as interactive point-of-sale terminals, medical instruments and factory network hubs.

The EPC-43 consists of the EPM-1, which contains the processor/chipset core of the computer, and the I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

. This design isolates the target I/O from the high speed circuitry associated with Pentium processors and ensures the long-life of the product by allowing the designer to upgrade the I/O baseboard with a faster processor module.

For instance, if the application develops to become more graphics-intensive, an EPC-43 with a 100-, 133- or 166MHz Pentium processor can be upgraded to a 200MHz MMX (MultiMedia EXtensions) A set of 57 additional instructions built into the Pentium MMX chip for improved multimedia and modem performance by performing mathematical operations on multiple sets of data at the same time (see SIMD).  processor module with no other change to the design.

"The EPC-43 is a compact, stand-alone computer for embedded applications that require high performance graphics, networking or computation deeply integrated into the OEM's end product," said Charlie Crawford, director of marketing for RadiSys' Integrated Products Division. "The combination of the Pentium processor and powerful I/O baseboard make it particularly suitable where multimedia functionality and fast throughput are necessary."

EPC-43 features

The EPC-43 with the EPM-1 is a fully configured PC, including 10/100 BaseT Ethernet, CardBus interface, Sound Blaster compatible sound support, two USBs, four serial ports, one parallel port, on-board application flash, floppy, hard disk, and CD drive interfaces plus PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

To facilitate customers' hardware and software evaluation and development cycle, RadiSys has created the EPC-43-DEV development kit, which includes an open chassis, circuit diagrams and other comprehensive documentation. The Phoenix OEM Adaptation Kit (OAK) is available as an option with the EPC-43-DEV so customers can customize the BIOS for their application.
