Router Evaluation Platform

RadiSys Corp. (Nasdaq:RSYS) announced today the availability of complete Ethernet router applications for RadiSys' Intel(R) IXP1200 network processor-based hardware.

The integrated Ethernet router application consists of run-time binary images that include a 4-port Ethernet (10/100 Mbit) routing and forwarding microcode subsystem and application software, a high-performance real-time operating system (operating system) Real-Time Operating System - (RTOS) Any operating system where interrupts are guaranteed to be handled within a certain specified maximum time, thereby making it suitable for control of hardware in embedded systems and other time-critical applications.  (Microware OS-9(R) for IXP1200 RTOS (1) (RealTime Operating System) An operating system designed for use in a real time computer system. See real time system, embedded system, process control and OS-9. ), and robust development tools. RadiSys is a leading global designer and manufacturer of building blocks enabling next-generation Internet and communications systems.

The Ethernet routing application product provides IXP1200 network processor customers an evaluation platform that allows them to evaluate the IXP1200 network processor using production level hardware and software. Routing solutions include Layer 3 routing (RIPv1v2, OSPFv2), SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  network management (Master agent and MIB (1) (Management Information Base) The hierarchical database used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP) to describe the particular device being monitored. About the RadiSys ENP-3511 and ENP-2505

The ENP-2505 and ENP-3511 are powered by the Intel(R) IXP1200 network processor. The ENP-2505 is designed in an industry standard PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

(2) (Peripheral Component Interconnect) The most widely used I/O bus (peripheral bus).
form factor. The ENP-3511 is designed in the popular CompactPCI form factor.

The RadiSys ENP-2505 offers an application I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

configuration of four 10/100 Mbit Ethernet ports. It also features a PCI-to-PCI bridge that allows operation of the PCI bus at 64-bit width and speeds of up to 66MHz, 256 MBytes of SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM) A type of dynamic RAM (DRAM) memory chip that has been widely used since the late 1990s. SDRAM chips eliminated wait states by dividing the chip into two cell blocks and interleaving data between them. , and 8 Mbytes of on-board flash memory. The first Mbyte of this on-board flash memory contains a monitor, hardware diagnostics and the provisioning engine. For high-speed access to data required in wire speed applications, such as access to a routing table, the ENP-2505 includes 8 Mbytes of on-board SRAM See static RAM.

Additionally, the ENP-2505 offers a PMC (1) See Portable Media Center.

site. This PMC site can be used for extensions to the hardware capability of the board to offer additional applications flexibility and features. For example, in a network security appliance application that requires packet encryption, an encryption/decryption hardware accelerator PMC can be installed to add this functionality.

The RadiSys ENP-3511 features eight 10/100 BaseT Ethernet ports on the high-speed IX bus and two10/100 BaseT Ethernet ports on the PCI bus. All of these connections are available through RJ-45 connectors on the rear transition module. To facilitate connectivity in a development environment, one of the Ethernet connections on the PCI bus is also available through an RJ-45 connector on the front panel.

For connection to the TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) A technology that transmits multiple signals simultaneously over a single transmission path. Each lower-speed signal is time sliced into one high-speed transmission.  data stream of the CompactPCI H.110 bus, the ENP-3511 features the Agere's T8105 time-slot interchanger device with the high-speed connection of TDM data to the IX bus of the IXP1200 Network Processor implemented with the RadiSys TDM2IX interface device. Additionally, the ENP-3511 supports a PMC site that can be used for I/O expansion through PMC modules or to allow for the design of other special purpose interfaces. This support enables customers to use either off-the-shelf PMCs or their own designs.

Designed for high availability in telecom and datacom equipment applications, the ENP-3511 offers a full suite of features to enable 99.999 percent system availability, including: two 10/100 BaseT Ethernet ports on the PCI bus of the IXP1200 network processor implemented in conformance to the PICMG An industry consortium that develops specifications for backplanes and interconnects for electronic equipment in the industrial and telecom fields. It was founded in 1994 as the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group, hence the acronym.  2.16 specification; complete support for the IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface) A protocol for monitoring server hardware for temperature, voltage, chassis intrusion, etc. Introduced in 1998 by Intel, HP, NEC and Dell, IPMI defines a standard set of messages for the characteristics of hardware  platform management interface bus standard; and full support for CompactPCI hot swap.
