Business Editors and High-Tech Writers

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 15, 2001

Racal Instruments Inc. announced the launch of the Model 1260-160B/E high-density, long-life, 1- and 2-slot microwave switch plug-in, ideal for use in testing any application in the microwave communications market: cellular, PCS (1) (Personal Communications Services) Refers to wireless services that emerged after the U.S. government auctioned commercial licenses in 1994 and 1995. This radio spectrum in the 1. , satcom signals, medical equipment, microwave radios, and military telecommunications and surveillance systems.

The 1260-160B is a one-slot plug-in with 2 single-pole double-throw (SPDT SPDT Single Pole, Double Throw

) relays, and the 1260-160E is a two-slot plug-in with 5 SPDT relays. Both are designed for use in either the Adapt-a-Switch(TM) 1260-100, VXI (VME EXtensions for Instrumentation) A peripheral bus specialized for data acquisition and real time control systems. Introduced in 1987, VXI uses all Eurocard form factors and adds trigger lines, a local bus and other functions suited for measurement applications.  carrier, or the 1256, GPIB/RS-232 Switching Mainframe. The 1260-160B/E's plug-in design enables rapid switch card expansion and replacement, while the easily configured relays facilitate user-specific test configurations.

Recognizing a user's need to simultaneously switch a range of high-density, microwave signals on the same VXI platform, Racal designed its latest microwave switch plug-in with an 18 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  bandwidth and extra-long switching life of 5 million operations (minimum), enabling users to switch high-density signals in only two VXI slots, while reducing the need for plug-in replacements. Users operating oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers A hardware device or software used to examine the frequency and power components of a signal. It provides more information than an oscilloscope, because it can display the signals over a range of frequencies. , network analyzers A specialized hardware device or software in a desktop or laptop computer that captures packets transmitted in a network for routine inspection and problem detection. Also called a "sniffer," "packet sniffer," "packet analyzer," "traffic analyzer" and "protocol analyzer," the network , and signal generators benefit from the 1260-160B/E's versatility.

As part of Racal's Adapt-a-Switch line, the Model 1260-160B/E includes drivers for LabWindows/CVI and LabVIEW for VXI applications. It is programmable via GPIB (General Purpose Interface Bus) An IEEE 488 standard parallel interface used for attaching sensors and programmable instruments to a computer. Using a 24-pin connector, up to 15 devices can be daisy chained together. HP's version is the HPIB.  commands when used with Racal's 1256 Switching System. It also includes VXIplug&play compliant support for Windows 95/98/NT/2000 platforms. Racal Instruments actively supports the 1260-160B/E, as well as all of its ATE systems, with a globally integrated field service network.

The new 1260-160B/E is available for delivery from stock to 12 weeks and priced from $1,595 (U.S. Domestic).
