RYCKEBOSCH DOES IT ALL FOR VOLLEYBALL TEAM.

Byline: Gideon Rubin Special to the Daily News

LANCASTER - Amy Ryckebosch didn't know what her role would be when she joined Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
 College's women's volleyball team.

``I had (no idea) where I was going to play,'' she said. ``I didn't even know if I was going to play.''

Ryckebosch has found her niche with the Marauders, who after several injuries have relied heavily on her energy and ability to play multiple positions.

Antelope Valley (7-3, 3-1 Foothill Conference), seeking its first conference title since 1993, will count on Ryckebosch's versatility next week in critical road games against defending conference champion San Bernardino Valley The San Bernardino Valley is the hub of Southern California's Inland Empire. It is drained by the Santa Ana River. It is bordered on the north by the San Bernardino Mountains and the eastern San Gabriel Mountains, on the east by the San Jacinto Mountains, and on the south and west  on Wednesday and perennial conference power Chaffey of Rancho Cucamonga Rancho Cucamonga (răn`chō k'kəmäng`gə), city (1990 pop. 101,409), San Bernardino co., S Calif.  on Friday. Both matches begin at 5 p.m.

A former Quartz Hill High standout, Ryckebosch got her first taste college volleyball several weeks into the season, stepping in when tendinitis tendinitis

She's also played in place of outside hitter Kristy Nua, who has been dogged by shoulder and knee injuries.

Ryckebosch has played every position for AVC (1) (Advanced Video Coding) The video compression techniques used in the H.264 standard, jointly developed by ISO and the ITU-T. See H.264.

``The fact that she can step in and play different positions really helps us,'' AVC coach Jane Cwayna said.

Ryckebosch believes she was utilized in different positions during high school and club volleyball after coaches noticed her directing traffic during rotations.

``I think it's a big accomplishment that I can play every position on the court,'' she said.

Her ability to play middle blocker although she is only 5-foot-9 has raised eyebrows.

``A lot of people were surprised,'' Ryckebosch said. ``It's a challenge sometimes, because I'm not that tall, but it's not that big of a deal. I just try to find a way to hit around them.''

Ryckebosch's smarts and communication skills have helped the Marauders, too, said AVC outside hitter Jennie Nua - Kristy's older sister - who leads the team with 146 kills and 16 blocks.

``(Ryckebosch is) just really good at the mental part of the game,'' Jennie Nua said. ``She plays in the back row right behind me, and she always tells me where to hit it. She's always telling me, 'Hit it long' or 'Hit it down the line.' She's helped me a lot.''
