RYAN NAMED CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER AT MEDTRONIC, INC.

 MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Medtronic, Inc. (NYSE: MDT), announced today that Robert L. Ryan, formerly vice president and chief financial officer of Union Texas Petroleum Corp., Houston, has been appointed senior vice president and chief financial officer. He will assume his new duties April 15, reporting to William W. George, president and chief executive officer.
 Ryan joined Union Texas Petroleum in 1982 and held positions as controller and treasurer before becoming vice president, finance, and CFO in 1984. He previously had held management positions with Citicorp, New York, from 1975 to 1982 and McKinsey & Co., New York, from 1970 to 1975.
 Ryan, 49, received his bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from Wayne State University and Cornell University respectively, and the master's degree in business administration from Harvard University. He will be responsible for all financial functions at Medtronic.
