THOUSAND OAKS Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Saturday night, Ryan and the Regents faced a significant challenge in Chowchilla's Jessica Diepersloot but responded like champions. The Regents got 17 kills from Ryan and good balance from the rest of the team in a 15-7, 15-10, 15-12 victory in the second round of the state playoffs at La Reina La Reina (Spanish: "The queen") is a commune of Chile located in Santiago Province, Santiago Metropolitan Region. It consistently ranks in the top five communes with the best quality of life in the Metropolitan Region.  High.

The Regents (28-0) advance to host either Marymount, which would provide a rematch of last weekend's Division IV-AA final, or Liberty of Bakersfield in Tuesday's Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  championship.

``I'll tell you what, we got a great challenge,'' La Reina coach Don Hyatt said. ``That was one of the best teams we've seen all year, and that includes all of the Southern Section, Division I, II, III, everything.''

Hyatt has talked all year of the Regents' balance and ability to get a strong effort from hitters other than Ryan and outside hitter/setter Ashlie Hain (11 kills, six digs, 31 assists).

That was especially true against Chowchilla, as Ryan (17 kills, 11 digs, 4 blocks) and Diepersloot, who has committed to Cal Poly Cal Poly may refer to:

  • California State Polytechnic University, Pomona located in Pomona, California (Cal Poly Pomona)
, seemed to cancel each other out. The real heroes were players such as Christine Werner (seven kills, eight digs), Cara Kuebert (seven kills) and Lacy Ertel (10 kills, 13 digs).

``It doesn't have to be Jen with 30 or 40 kills all the time,'' Hyatt said. ``(Chowchilla) switched their rotation, so Ryan and (Diepersloot) kind of evened each other out, but we had a lot of other players step up.

``A player like Christine, she's been getting looks from Occidental (College) so I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

if that's what sparking her, but she has been playing great. It's either that or just a love for the team.''

The first game suggested that the Regents would have a relatively easy night. They built a 7-2 lead, but the Redskins Redskins can refer to:

  • The Washington Redskins, a United States football team.

came alive when Diepersloot rotated to the front of the net.

Chowchilla hung with La Reina for the rest of the first game and came out strong in the second, when they took a 7-3 lead, which they kept for most of the game.

La Reina twice battled back to get within one point but didn't take the lead until a kill by Hain put the Regents up 11-10. That points was part of a 7-0 run that gave the Regents the second game.

Chowchilla won the first three points of the third game, then faded, as the Regents built a 13-5 lead. Ryan took over the match during that stretch and the Redskins finally made some defense mistakes after an otherwise sparkling performance.

With their hopes all but dashed at 14-6, the Redskins rallied, and the Regents needed 11 game points to seal the match on a jump serve ace by Hain.

``This is definitely a different level (of play),'' Hyatt said. ``But this is what we've been looking forward to. It's no fun to beat some of the teams that we beat.''
