spending more than $615,000 to add nine examination and treatment rooms to the existing 17 in the hospital's emergency room.

The emergency room improvements - coupled with a $570,000 plan to triple the size of the waiting room - are in response to a growing patient load that is creating long waits for treatment.

``We're striving to meet the expanding needs of the community as quickly as we can,'' said Donna Meyer, a hospital vice president.

Work on the emergency room is scheduled to start in about three months and take 14 months to complete, officials said. The $615,371 project includes $414,246 for construction and $201,125 for exam tables, lighting, medical monitors and other equipment.

The waiting room project, estimated at $570,000, will be funded by money pledged by the hospital's volunteer auxiliary auxiliary

The number of emergency-room visits has been climbing over the years and escalated when Desert Palms Community Hospital in Palmdale closed in March. That added eight to 10 people a day to the Antelope Valley patient load, officials said.

The heavy patient load has led to long waits for treatment - up to four hours during peak weekend periods, officials said.
