The Mayor of St. Petersburg Petersburg, city (1990 pop. 38,386), politically independent and in no county, SE Va., on the Appomattox River; inc. 1850. A port of entry and an important tobacco market, it has industries producing chemicals, pharmaceuticals, furniture, structural steel, lumber, , the former imperial capital and Russia's second largest city, Yakovlev is a close ally of Luzhkov. He beat Anatoly Sobchak Anatoly Alexandrovich Sobchak (Russian: Анато́лий Алекса́ндрович , a Yeltsin ally, in the June 1996 municipal polls. Aged 53 and born in Olekminsk, in Yakutia, Yakovlev was Sobchak's deputy until just before the elections when he denounced the latter for neglecting the city's inhabitants
