However, Rush is also being investigated for possible violations resulting from his financial relationship with former AAU AAU

The agent situation seems clear. According to sources close to UCLA and Rush, he accepted between $200-300 from agent Jerome Stanley - a violation of the NCAA's extra-benefits rule that could jeopardize his amateur status.

``Usually, the athlete is immediately ruled ineligible,'' Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hansen said. ``The restoration process begins when the student-athlete pays back the money received and loses a few games.''

If Rush agreed to future representation by Stanley - either orally or in writing - the penalties probably would be severe.

If it's only a matter of $200-300, history indicates Rush could return this season:

In 1995, USC football player Shawn Walters accepted $16,000 from an agent. His eligibility was terminated, then returned on appeal.

Cal basketball player Tremaine Fowlkes accepted $2,000 from an agent to purchase a vehicle. He was ruled ineligible for one year, but the penalty was reduced to 14 games on appeal.

UCLA football player Donnie Edwards accepted groceries valued at $150. He was ineligible for one game.

Arizona basketball player Ben Davis accepted gifts valued at $3,453 from a New York New York, state, United States

Arizona football player Richard Dice was ineligible for one game for making $17 in telephone calls on an agent's credit card.

``I'd say Rush is probably looking at five games or so because of the thing with Stanley,'' a Pac-10 source said. ``But the Piggie situation could complicate it.''
