RUNNING UP THE SCORE; LOBOS THRIVE ON FASTBREAK.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

The Lobos rarely stop to rest their feet.

They're favored to win the Golden League championship because of their ability to score fastbreak points in bunches.

Gone is the inside game that featured big men Tony Mayes and Matt White. A more athletic Littlerock starting five of guards Justin Berkley and Jose Zavala, forwards Gene Myvett and Franklin Robinson, and center Brandon White Brandon Christian White (December 22, 1972- current, born in Baltimore, MD) is an entrepreneur known as an internet pioneer for starting an internet site called ChesapeakeAngler.com in 1995 which later became the better know recreational fishing site called WorldWideAngler.com.  prefers to run the floor and beat opponents down court for layups in transition.

"Our offensive scheme this year against man-to-man (defense) is more of an outside first and inside second," said coach Ben Dale, whose No. 5 Lobos (14-5 overall) took a 3-0 Golden League record into Tuesday's game against Lancaster. "As much zone as we're seeing and as fast as we are, fastbreak points is really the stat that we're looking at."

In Littlerock's 67-64 victory over Quartz Hill to open the league season, more than half (35) of the Lobos' points came on the fastbreak.

They feel opposing teams can't control the tempo enough to prevent them from getting the fastbreak rolling.

That is if the Lobos can prevent second shot opportunities. With both White and Robinson averaging double digits Double Digits was a pricing game on the American television game show, The Price Is Right.  in transition.

"You have to dictate it yourself, and it starts on the defensive glass," Dale said. "So if we can get Brandon, Frank and Gene to rebound, we can get the ball down the court."

Dale estimates the Lobos will spend at least 35-40 minutes on perfecting the fast break in a two-hour practice session.

"We try to have that be sort of the identifying mark of our program," Dale said. "I want coaches to be forced to talk to their kids about stopping the fast break. And to stop the fast break that's a difficult strategy.

"You want to get offensive rebounds. To increase your chances of offensive rebounds you have to send more guys to the glass. But if (the other team) sends more guys to the glass, we can get back in transition. It's a chess match for the fast break game."

--Lancaster: The Eagles were 3-0 in Golden League play entering Tuesday's showdown at Littlerock.

Lancaster had won its first two league games when its best returning player, forward James Jackson James Jackson may refer to:

Jackson, who missed nine games while fulfilling academic requirements, scored a game-high 18 points in the Eagles' 71-57 win over the visiting Bulldogs.

The return of Jackson and the continued steady play of guard Teddy Myers and the 3-point shooting of Aaron James Aaron James (born October 5 1952, in New Orleans, Louisiana) is an American former professional basketball player in the NBA. But there have been some rather ugly performances in the first round of Golden League games.

After Palmdale and Highland combined for 44 turnovers in the Falcons' league-opening win, Palmdale again had trouble holding onto the basketball in a 72-61 loss to Quartz Hill last Friday.

The Rebels and Falcons combined for 51 turnovers.

Highland coach Lyn Boop, whose Bulldogs went winless in their first three league games, has noticed a rather disturbing trend throughout the league.

"Overall in this valley, just among the Golden League schools, as a coach I sit around and watch and we film games, and I talk to the other coaches; and it just seems like passing and good decision making is a lost art."
