RUNNING INTO HISTORY; FARGAS IS ONE OF AREA'S GREATEST BACKS EVER : TOP RUNNING BACKS.

``I want to be a running back,'' Justin Fargas Justin Fargas (born January 25, 1980 in Encino, California) is a football player in the NFL. Professional career

``There is a picture of him making a cut and he is so skinny and so boney and his pants are halfway coming down and you'd think he was a twig TWIG - Tree-Walking Instruction Generator.

With each season, Fargas became stronger, faster and better. From a frail 155-pound freshman, he's now a firm, muscular 190 pounds. After running 100 meters in 11.8 seconds as a freshman, he's now the reigning state 100-meter track champion after winning in 10.52 seconds last June. From bench pressing 200 pounds, he's now lifting 315 pounds.

No area running back has ever put together a season quite like Fargas did in 1996 - not Russell White, not Jermaine Lewis Jermaine Lewis (born October 16, 1974 in Lanham, Maryland) is an American football wide receiver in the NFL.

, not Aaron Emanuel. He rushed for an area-record 2,970 yards and scored 38 touchdowns.

By the end of the season, every opponent knew who they had to stop. But even that didn't prevent Fargas from continuing to break tackles, elude defenders and slip through holes on his way to a record-breaking season.

It all creates high expectations for his final season of prep football. With practice beginning next week, Fargas recognizes that every defensive player will be looking for Looking for

No. 34 when they play Notre Dame. Is he worried? Hardly.

``People say, `They're going to be coming after you this year.' I think they were coming after me last year. I'm coming after them, that's how I look at it,'' he said.

Most intriguing about Fargas is his evolution from a star soccer player to a tailback in football. He lived with his mother on the East Coast, playing soccer, baseball and basketball. Because the football and soccer seasons were played at the same time, he had no intentions of going out for football.

Then he moved to Encino to live with his father. He discovered he could go out for football and still play soccer. But soon soccer lost out.

``I fell in love with football,'' Fargas said. ``Everything about it, I like. I knew it was my sport. My interest in soccer went away.''

Fargas' success is not only the result of maturing into his 6-foot-1 body. It's also his relentless pursuit to keep improving. During the spring, he lifted weights three times a day to increase his strength and speed. It worked to perfection Adv. 1. to perfection - in every detail; "the new house suited them to a T"

``It's just incredible how he's rising to the occasion and surprising even me,'' said his father, Antonio, an actor who gained fame playing the role of ``Huggy Bear'' in the 1970s action series, ``Starsky and Hutch Starsky and Hutch

. He gained many of his rushing yards through his power and upper-body strength. Now that he has added breakaway speed, how much more dominant can he become?

``It will be interesting,'' said track coach/assistant football coach Joe McNab. ``He's way faster and he's bigger.''

``I think he's an extraordinary player,'' Notre Dame head coach Kevin Rooney Kevin Rooney born on May 4, 1956 in Catskill, NY and is a boxing trainer and former boxer. Amateur Boxing Career

said. ``He's really something special, not only in terms of his God-given ability but his work ethic and unselfishness.''

Fargas starts at each carry with the same philosophy.

``I try to run with the frame of mind that I'm going to score on every play,'' he said. ``You have to think the defense can't stop you and you have to give everything you have to make sure they don't.''

His primary focus, though, is on trying to lead Notre Dame to a Southern Section Division III championship.

``I can't wait, I can't wait,'' he said of Notre Dame's season opener against Alemany on Sept. 12. ``I just want to get it going.''
