RUN MAN RUN TOPS DAY OF UPSETS BEFORE 42,348.

Byline: Kevin Modesti Daily News Staff Writer

At least for one day, not all of the surprises at Santa Anita Park Santa Anita Park is a thoroughbred racetrack in Arcadia, California, USA. It is known for offering some of the prominent racing events in the United States during the autumn and in winter. Racing at Santa Anita began in 1934.  came from Frank Stronach Frank Stronach, CM (born September 6, 1932 as Franz Strohsack) is an Austrian and Canadian businessman. He is the founder of Magna International, an international automotive parts company based in Aurora, Ontario, Canada, and Magna Entertainment Corp. .

The track opened its first season under Stronach's ambitious ownership with an afternoon of upsets Saturday, including a Malibu Stakes The Malibu Stakes is a race for three-year-old thoroughbred horses of either gender held each December at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. Event of the Year was favored in his first start since a knee fracture kept him out of the Kentucky Derby, and after sweating nervously on his way to the gate, he ran well to be beaten only by fitter horses.

Run Man Run (who paid $29.20) came out of a Nov. 26 allowance victory at Aqueduct. The son of Theatrical is only the second Grade I stakes winner for trainer Anthony Margotta Jr. (who won the 1993 Whitney with Brunswick).

``The race went a little bit different than planned,'' said Luzzi, who'd planned to drop in behind the front-runners after starting from an outside gate. ``But that's what we're out there for, to improvise, and I had to improvise a little bit down the backstretch back·stretch

. He broke so sharp, I just threw our plans right out the window.''

It was the first Santa Anita victory for the New York-based Luzzi - on a day filled with firsts.

Both maiden winners on the nine-race card were first-time starters: Sasha's Prospect ($6.60) and Cape Canaveral ($12.80), D. Wayne Lukas-trained sons of Mr. Prospector.

Two of the three turf-course winners were making their first U.S. starts: French-bred Special Quest ($3.80) for trainer Richard Mandella and Irish-bred Aliena ($11.80) for Ron McAnally.

Special Quest was the only winning favorite. The day began with BJ Ballet, the first of jockey Alex Solis' three victories, going wire to wire at $20.20. It ended with Half Past Ten coming from off the pace under Octavio Vergara to win at $54. And in the middle, Mountain Bike and Laffit Pincay sprang a $34 surprise.

The result might be that much of the crowd, the largest in four years for a Santa Anita opener, will be back today to chase a $212,430 carryover in the pick-six.

The 84-day meet continues today when stakes winners Brulay, with Corey Nakatani riding, and Magical Allure, with Gary Stevens, meet for the first time in the La Brea, the fillies' equivalent of the Malibu.

The 5-year-old from Bob Baffert's barn is entered in a mile stakes called the Ack Ack.
