RUN FOR ROSES HEATS UP; UCLA MUST WIN REMAINING GAMES.

Byline: Jon Wilner Daily News Staff Writer

receiver Jim McElroy James Charles McElroy, Jr. (born October 4, 1953 in Cotton Plant, Arkansas) is an American former professional basketball player.

A 6'3" guard from Central Michigan University, McElroy played in the National Basketball Association from 1975 to 1982 as a member of the New

But only half of those gathered were paying attention Noun 1. paying attention - paying particular notice (as to children or helpless people); "his attentiveness to her wishes"; "he spends without heed to the consequences"

What could have been more important than McElroy's comments on the swinging gate and his touchdown connection with quarterback Cade McNown Cade McNown (born January 12 1977 in Portland, Oregon) is a quarterback who played in the National Football League. He attended played college football at the University of California, Los Angeles. ? The Arizona-Washington State game, visible on a TV monitor in the upper corner of the press room.

Conclusion: There's a Rose Bowl race going on.

``The last three games will determine our fate for the bowls and the Pac-10,'' McElroy said. ``We're on a roll. Once the snowball gets going, it keeps gathering speed. Then it becomes an avalanche. This team is an avalanche.''

With six consecutive victories, the Bruins (6-2, 4-1) are squarely in the Rose Bowl picture. They're in third place, one game behind the Washington schools in the loss column. They have clinched enough victories for bowl participation, although they cannot afford to lose their final three (Stanford, Washington, USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. ) and remain a marketable postseason commodity.

``We're keeping ourselves in a position to make a run,'' McNown said. ``We just have to win the rest of our games. We can't control anything else.''

While UCLA's overall bowl situation is complicated - there are at least five possible destinations - its Rose Bowl status is not. Two things must happen for a New Year's in Pasadena: The Bruins must win their remaining games, and Washington State must lose twice. (That failed fourth-and-1 in Pullman looms larger each week.) The Cougars have three conference games left: at Arizona State, Stanford, at Washington.

If UCLA beats Washington and Washington beats Washington State - creating a three-way tie at 7-1 - the Cougars earn the Rose Bowl berth based on their perfect nonconference record. It pays to play Illinois, Boise State and Southwestern Louisiana.

If UCLA defeats Washington and those teams finish in a two-way tie for the championship, the Bruins get the Roses because of the head-to-head victory.

There are several scenarios involving Arizona State, as well. Remember, the Sun Devils
  • Arizona State Sun Devils
  • Sun Devils, a DC Comics maxi-series
have one league loss and four winnable games left: at Cal; Washington State, Oregon and Arizona at home.

Confused? Look at it this way:

If the Bruins win out, they will play in either the Rose or Cotton bowls.

If they win two of three, they're probably bound for the Holiday or Sun.

If they win one of three, it's either Sun or Aloha.

For now, Stanford is the issue. Thanks to an open date, the Cardinal should be rested and well-prepared for UCLA's West Coast offense and amoeba amoeba: see ameba.

Few things get their attention quicker than meaningful November games.

``I told them we had to win October, and if we did it'd guarantee a winning season,'' coach Bob Toledo Bob Toledo (born March 4, 1946, in San Jose, California) is an American football coach, recently hired as head coach at Tulane University. He is best-known as the thirteenth head coach at UCLA.  said. ``But I told them . . . that championships are won in November.''

Proof? Just check the TV screens.
