RULE CHANGE: TV TO AID REFS WITH CLOCK.

The NCAA Basketball Rules Committee has made a few changes, one prompted by the UCLA women's basketball team.

The women's rules committee, in response to a controversial call during this year's NCAA Tournament, will allow referees to use television monitors to make a correct call when it comes to clock management next season.

The other changes will affect just the men's game. The NCAA decided the possession arrow won't be used to determine which team gets the ball in situations where the defense forces a held-ball.

Starting next season, the defensive team will get the ball when it forces a held-ball, rather than have possession dictated on an alternating basis.

The use of the possession arrow in that situation has been criticized because the ball was returned to the offense half the time, even though the defense had made the better play.

The possession arrow, which was first introduced during the 1981-82 season, will still be used in other situations such as two opposing players knocking a ball out of bounds at the same time.

Other permanent rules changes:

Basket interference will be called if a player pulls down a movable basket rim and it touches the ball before returning to its original position. Previously, there was no specific rule for that situation.

When a double personal foul is called, the ball will be awarded to the team that was in possession. There will be no change in the possession arrow and the shot clock will not be reset. Previously, possession was determined by the arrow.
