The Rim of the World Rally is the third round in the 1999 Michelin Sports Car Club of America ProRally Championship, which pits drivers and their navigators against challenging forest, mountain and desert roads - sight unseen.

Using a detailed route book and a sophisticated rally computer, the co-driver keeps the team on course and advises the driver of any hazards noted in the route book.

Racing started Friday and concludes around 9:30 p.m. tonight at the Holiday Inn in Palmdale.

Cars race against the clock one at a time along 12 special stages, ranging up to 25 miles in length, of dirt roads through the Angeles National Forest The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. From 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, racing fans can take rides in rally cars around a short course outside the Holiday Inn, 38630 Fifth St. W. Maps are available from the Holiday Inn, and the first cars are scheduled to start the Leona Ridge section around 3:45 p.m. It takes about 40 minutes to drive from the hotel to the viewing area, organizers say.

Racers will halt around 4:15 p.m. at the Lake Hughes Community Club for dinner. Spectators can enjoy a hamburger dinner for $5. The rally teams will race off again at 8 p.m. for their final segments.
