RUBBER COATING SET FOR STREETS OF AGOURA HILLS.Byline: Kevin F. Sherry Daily News Staff Writer In the next few weeks, Agoura Hills will undertake the most extensive street resurfacing project in the city's history. A full six miles of roads - about one-tenth of the streets in the city limits - will have their lives extended by a thin strip of environmentally friendly Environmentally friendly, also referred to as nature friendly, is a term used to refer to goods and services considered to inflict minimal harm on the environment.[1] rubber. The City Council has awarded the $800,000 project to Silvia Construction of Rancho Cucamonga Rancho Cucamonga (răn`chō k 'kəmäng`gə), city (1990 pop. 101,409), San Bernardino co., S Calif. . In just 60 days, the company will seal cracks, repair other damage and resurface re·sur·face v. re·sur·faced, re·sur·fac·ing, re·sur·fac·es v.tr. To cover with a new surface: resurfacing a road; resurfaced the floor. v.intr. 34 city roads. ``This is by far and away the largest project we've ever done,'' said Jim Thorsen, the city engineer. ``An overlay will rejuvenate re·ju·ve·nate tr.v. re·ju·ve·nat·ed, re·ju·ve·nat·ing, re·ju·ve·nates 1. What do residents think of the planned improvements? ``Yee-haw!'' said John Pauley, a five-year resident of Slicers Circle, one of the streets scheduled for an overlay. ``I'm excited about it.'' Slicers Circle has a seam running along the curb where a cable was installed several years ago, Pauley said. Now he spends time attacking the grass and weeds that grow in the seam's cracks. ``It looks bad and it's in need of repair,'' he said. Most of the streets on the project list are residential, although three minor arterial streets - Canwood Street, Roadside Drive and Palo Comado Drive - will also be resurfaced, Thorsen said. Some residents said their streets were in good shape and provided smooth driving. ``It looks pretty good to me,'' said Antonia Branch, a 21-year resident of Yankee Drive. ``I think that it's OK. I haven't noticed that it's breaking down.'' None of the streets on the repair list is in complete disrepair, and the program should prevent them from getting that way. ``The streets are in fairly good shape,'' Thorsen said. ``They're all pretty much drivable.'' An unusual feature of the contract is that it requires Silvia Construction to make use of a type of rubberized asphalt Rubberized asphalt is pavement material that consists of regular asphalt concrete mixed with crumb rubber -- ground, used tires that would otherwise be discarded or take up space in landfills. that will be made from 30,000 recycled automobile tires. The tire material is less expensive than regular asphalt, and the layer atop the street surface will need to be only 1.5 to 2 inches thick, compared with a 2- to 4-inch layer of regular material, Thorsen said. ``You don't have to use as much asphalt,'' he said. Although some streets will have temporary closures of single lanes, ``people will be able to pass through at all times,'' Thorsen said. The city chose to fix the streets now because it had saved money after a few years of letting routine maintenance fall behind schedule. ``We're probably losing ground in our overlay program,'' he said.
