For the town in Ulster County, see Rochester, Ulster County, New York. Rochester, once known as The Flour City, and more recently as The Flower City or , announced the availability of its new RSA ESCON (Enterprise Systems CONnection) An IBM S/390 fiber-optic channel that transfers 17 Mbytes/sec over distances up to 60 km depending on connection type. ESCON allows peripheral devices to be located across large campuses and metropolitan areas. Channel Card. The RSA ESCON Channel Card offers greater flexibility in mainframe connectivity, and is the latest addition to RSA's family of IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) channel solutions. ESCON is a fiber-optic link available on most mainframes, and is a standard interconnection method for IBM's Enterprise Systems. The ESCON interface provides higher speed, and reliability compared to the S/390 parallel Bus & Tag channel. The RSA ESCON Channel Card features a PCI card, compatible with Sun Solaris, used to replace Bus & Tag channel attached connections from IBM mainframes to production printers. The card can be installed directly on the Sun print controller of most production PostScript printers, providing a direct ESCON connection from the mainframe to the printer. In addition, the RSA ESCON Channel Card can be installed in a separate low cost Sun workstation, and act as a powerful ESCON Channel Server. The ESCON Channel Server can distribute mainframe print data to up to 24 different printers, including desktop and midrange printers that do not have a Sun print controller. Donald Webster, RSA Director of Technology, said, "Mainframe customers have been migrating to ESCON, and getting away from Bus & Tag connectivity. RSA's new ESCON Channel Card takes advantage of this market trend, and enables customers to connect production printers directly via their ESCON link."
