In their first eight innings INNINGS, estates. Lands gained from the sea by draining. Cunn. L. Dict. h. t.; Law of Sewers, 31.  in league play, the Highlanders had been outscored by 12 runs. Everything seemed out of control.

Now, Royal is controlling the league. The first-place Highlanders scored nine runs in the sixth inning to beat Camarillo 14-4 on Wednesday to take a two-game lead with six games left.

The Highlanders were still batting when the game was ended by the home-plate umpire, who invoked the 10-run mercy rule A mercy rule, also well known by the slightly less polite term slaughter rule (or, less commonly, knockout rule and skunk rule), brings a sports event to an early end when one team has a very large and presumably insurmountable lead over the other team. . Then the Royal players ran out to the left-field fence and each gave Camarillo's 1997 league-championship banner a punch. The Scorpions won the league title last season on the last day when Royal was beaten by Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. .

``It just feels like they stole it from us last year,'' said Royal starter Mike Byer, who overcame a 34-pitch first inning to improve to 6-2.

Royal left fielder Tony Ortega, whose triple drove in the game's final run, said the Highlanders were motivated to get a piece of the sign before they went out and got 18 hits, including seven for extra bases.

``Before the game they ran out and touched (the sign),'' said Ortega, who also hit his fifth homer of the year in the first. ``Right now, our confidence is at a high.''

Royal coach Dan Maye said, ``We told our guys, `Look at that sign. That's what we want to do.' ''

Royal, ranked No. 6 by the Daily News, improved to 7-1 in league, 14-4 overall. The Highlanders have won seven in a row since being shut out by Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Camarillo (16-5, 6-3) has had a rough week. The Scorpions lost 12-1 on Monday to Westlake and face the suddenly hot Warriors again on Friday.

``We got beat by a better team today,'' Scorpions coach Scott Cline cline, in biology, any gradual change in a particular characteristic of a population of organisms from one end of the geographical range of the population to the other.  said. ``(The Highlanders) are thinking they've got (the title) this year, but there are still six games left.''

The Highlanders were holding on to a 5-4 lead heading into the sixth. They sent 12 batters to the plate against three Camarillo pitchers, and 10 reached safely. Bobby Egan, who went 3 for 4 with two RBI RBI

``All of a sudden, we've put some games together and stayed on top,'' said Maye, who has won two league titles with the Highlanders.
