Facer, a senior at La Canada, sped to a 3:14 1,200-meter leadoff leg in the distance medley relay The Distance Medley Relay is an athletic event in which four athletes compete as part of a relay. Unlike most track relays, each member of the team runs a different distance. A Distance Medley Relay is made up of a 1200 meter leg, a 400 meter leg, an 800 meter leg, and a 1600 meter leg - , which the Spartans won easily in 10:58.6.

``I really like the 1,200,'' said Facer. ``It is midway between the mile and the 800. It is a lot more exciting.''

However, because the distance covers three laps rather than four of the 400-meter track, it is not recognized in many meets.

Still, said La Canada coach Dennis McNulty said, ``three quarters of a mile is perfect for him.''

``He does not really have the speed to be half miler mil·er

Facer did a little bit of everything on a hot, dry Saturday afternoon in his season debut.

In addition to running in the distance medley, Facer ran a 2:02.1 anchor for 800 meters to equal his lifetime best in the 3,200-meter relay. His effort brought the Spartans from sixth to third in 8:44.1.

Facer finished the afternoon running a leg on the 1,600 relay team which finished sixth.

As a sophomore, Facer concentrated on the 1,600, but a snowboard-related neck injury in the offseason forced him to miss most of his junior season.

Despite an absence of a solid endurance base, Facer concentrated on the 800 meters last season, winding up as the Rio Hondo Rio Hondo may refer to:

In the offseason, Facer logged nearly 60 miles per week but was not quite sure to expect on Saturday.

``I felt in really good shape,'' Facer said. ``I was really happy to see what I could do."

Teaming with Niko Sarmadi, Chris Foss and Burnett in the distance medley comprised of the 1,200, 400, 800 and 1,600, Facer gave the Spartans an 80-meter advantage after his opening leg.

Facer was third after the opening quarter in 63.7 and moved into the first after two laps. He closed with 63.0 final quarter before handing off to Sarmadi for the 400 leg.

Burnett ran 4:36.3 unpressed on the 1,600 anchor for La Canada which won by almost a straightaway straight·a·way

``I have had some good days but this was definitely one of them,'' Facer said. ``It is still early in the season. This is just the beginning.''
