Royal High of Simi Valley's prom was scheduled for June 4 for a long time. Like so many other things this season for the Royal softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  team, the timing couldn't have been more perfect.

``It's almost like somebody wrote the book at the beginning of the season and everyone already knew how it was going to turn out,'' Highlanders' coach Bill Dishon said Saturday afternoon, one day after his team captured the first Southern Section title in school history with a 2-0 victory over Valencia. ``If we'd have played the game Saturday, we wouldn't have had a team. The girls would've gone to prom. But since we played Friday, the girls can celebrate (tonight) at prom.''

All year long, Royal seemed to be a team of destiny Destiny
