Royal, which overcame a 13-point deficit, came back in the fourth quarter after trailing the Panthers (11-14, 10-3) most of the game. The Highlanders tied the score at 38-38 with 4:53 remaining, then began a 16-1 run.

The Panthers went silent in the last minute to give Royal (21-4, 12-1) the league title.

Royal shared the league title with Newbury Park last season.

"Their shots fell in the fourth and ours didn't," Newbury Park coach Nori Parvin said. "You got to give Royal a lot of credit. We were co- champs with them last year. We played hard, but Royal deserved to win tonight."

Royal senior guard Erika Ward looked like she was having an off night, after only scoring four points in the first half. With the encouragement of her teammates she stayed composed, started making shots after halftime and finished with 12 points.

"A tough start. Everything was getting into my head," Ward said. "I kept my head up and kept shooting and they finally went in. I knew we could come back, we're a strong team."
