The Indians of Newhall won their second consecutive title at the 23rd annual invitational at Rancho Simi Rancho San José de Nuestra Senora de Altagarcia y Simi is one of the land grants in California by the Spanish government. Hart finished with 417 points, nearly 200 more than second-place Quartz Hill. However, many thought the Indians would struggle because they were supposed to be without two of their best swimmers: seniors Igor Bistric and David Deloria. Both were taking recruiting trips to UC Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850. .

However, the day before, Deloria got his trip pushed back to the afternoon. So he spent the morning helping the Indians win the 200 medley med·ley

When Deloria left in the afternoon, Bistric came back from his trip in time to win the 100 backstroke, and helped Hart get some additional points by placing ninth in the 100 breaststroke and being a part of the 400 freestyle relay tandem that finished third.

``Having those two guys there made things much easier and made me much happier,'' Neale said. ``They've been stars all four years they've been here. They like the races and it really helps the team all the way around, in both the relays and individual events.''

Quartz Hill hung on for second place when it won the 400 freestyle relay to hold off third-place Granada Hills. However, the Rebels were disappointed overall since they were hoping this would be their year to win it all.

``It is pretty tough,'' Quartz Hill boys' coach Mark Thibault said. ``These kids are swimming hard, but it's the middle of the season and sometimes you get tired and break down.

``But Hart is really good. They've got a lot of numbers and a lot of quality swimmers. This is good, though, because we need to be exposed to competition like this. It pushed our guys who are fast, and kind of gets the others going for improvement a little push as well. It shows us what we need to do to compete with the big boys."

Royal was aided by the fact its divers won the Royal Diving Invitational last weekend with 40 points. Points earned at that event carried over to Saturday.

``We've definitely established our diving program over the years,'' Royal coach Steve Snyder said. ``Our coach, Judy Wederman, has built up that program nicely over the last 22 years. She's always really good at working with the divers she's given.''
