Next time, the Highlanders might win, except their season has ended. Mira Costa (24-3), the fourth seed, advances to Wednesday's semifinal. Royal finishes 21-4.

``Lord knows we gave it everything we had,'' Royal coach Bob Ferguson said. ``But we made too many mistakes.''

Serving was the major one - 30 service errors.

After coming out strong in the first game, the Highlanders had trouble with their communication and lost the next two games.

It got so bad that the Royal coaching staff took the players out of the gym and spoke to them for one minute.

``I told them if they wanted the game, it was theirs,'' Ferguson said.

Whatever was said worked. Royal won the fourth game and overcame a 13-7 deficit in the fifth game to tie the score at 13.

But Mira Costa righted itself and finished the match on a Royal hitting error and a block by Anthony Palacios.

Royal middle blocker Cam Dickson finished with a team-high 16 kills, followed by Russell. Garrett Herzer added 13 kills and Dhiraj Coats had 12.

Royal seemed unable to stop Mira Costa outside hitter Andy Krikorian, who is bound for Cal. He finished with 25 kills. Dustin Avol added 17 kills.
