ROYAL MOVES ONE STEP CLOSER TO VOLLEYBALL CROWN : ROYAL 3, CAP. VALLEY 0.

Byline: Lee Barnathan Daily News Staff Writer

He's not normally one who shows satisfaction after a match, but Royal High School boys' volleyball coach Bob Ferguson showed it Wednesday night.

Gathering his players after their 15-9, 15-11, 15-3 Division I semifinal victory over Capistrano Valley at Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. , Ferguson didn't offer any criticism.

Instead, he shook everyone's hand and said, ``I usually say some inspiring words, but tonight, you guys inspired me. If you play at that level (in Saturday's final), you'll win it all.''

Ferguson was referring to how the Highlanders (20-0) dominated the Cougars (18-2) in every facet of the 1-hour, 22-minute contest. As a result, Royal, seeking its first Division I title, will play either Esperanza or Mira Costa in Saturday's 7 p.m. championship match at Cypress College Cypress College is a community college located in Cypress, California. Opened on September 12 1966 , the southern California college offers a variety of general education (51 associates degrees), transfer courses (58 transfer majors), and 139 vocational programs leading to .

titles, but the prospect of winning the big one excited everyone. In fact, no one complained the prom is at the same time as the title match.

``We'll just show up late and show them our championship,'' defensive specialist Dan Wilson Dan Wilson may refer to:

  • Dan Wilson (musician/radio show host), from Hertfordshire, England (also works under the names Meadow House and Ashfordaisyak)
 said.

It probably helped that Royal had beaten Capistrano Valley 16-14 in the Redondo tournament. The Highlanders knew they had to block Brady Starr in the middle and they knew of the Cougars' tendency to set USC-bound outside hitter Ryan Thurlow.

Starr was never a factor and finished with two blocks and two kills. This left Thurlow as the main threat, and Royal limited him to 15 kills - six below his season average. Beau Rawi added 10 kills.

``We blocked 11 (Starr) right away,'' Ferguson said. ``They never found our weaknesses. Plus, we dug some balls.''

Opposite hitter Nick Flanagan Nick Flanagan may refer to:
  • Nick Flanagan (golfer) (b. 1984), an Australian golfer
  • Nick Flanagan (comedian), a Canadian comedian

John Baxter had 61 assists for the Highlanders.

Denihan also had 14 blocks, including eight stuffs, and Garrett Herzer added four stuff blocks.

``They have some rotations where they're really weak,'' Flanagan said. ``We never get stuck in a bad rotation.''
