ROYAL JV TEAM SHOULD BE STRONG AGAIN; PALACIOS IS THE KEY AS RETURNING QB.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Daily News Staff Writer

The last two years haven't been kind to the Royal High School varsity football team, which suffered through disastrous seasons in 1995 and 1996.

The same cannot be said about the Highlanders' lower-level teams - the freshman and junior varsity teams For the American rock band, see .

In sports, usually at the high school and college levels, members of a team who are not the main players in a competition (such as a football or basketball game) are called junior varsity players.
 - both of which dominated opponents during the same span.

The trend figures to continue this year for the junior varsity junior varsity

``I think this team has a great chance of winning and being successful,'' quarterback Jonathan Palacios said.

Palacios is the key. He was the junior varsity quarterback as a freshman and returns as the starter this year. The 6-foot, 165-pounder is being groomed to replace varsity starter Braden Fien next year.

Despite the fact that a number of Palacios' teammates have moved on to the varsity club The Varsity Club was a professional wrestling heel stable in the NWA's Jim Crockett Promotions and World Championship Wrestling. The stable was formed in 1987 and lasted until 1989. The stable was briefly resurrected in 1999 – 2000. , there are capable replacements from a freshman team that went 10-0 in 1996.

During practice, Palacios has been impressed with wide receivers Oliver Jackson and Ken Maddux.

``They've both got a lot of speed,'' said Palacios, who is 49-5-1 as a quarterback dating back to his youth football career.

Other top players for Royal are Buzz Byer (offensive line and linebacker), Randy Plue (running back) and Marshall Montazerri (offensive line).

Palacios believes this group, coupled with the juniors playing for the varsity team In the United States and Canada and UK, varsity sports teams are the principal athletic teams representing a college, university, or high school or other secondary school. Such teams compete against the principal athletic teams at other colleges/universities, or in the case of  this year, will turn the Royal football program around.

``We know that we've been down compared to some of the other Marmonte League teams, so we feel like we have something to prove,'' Palacios said. ``We're planning on having a couple of great seasons.''

Although Royal is loaded, it is not the only talented team in the Marmonte League.

Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  is similar to the Highlanders. The Pioneers have suffered through lean years on the varsity level, but with a talented group of younger players they will be a team to beat in the next few years.

Simi Valley is led by explosive running back Calvin Bell, quarterback Ben Santiago and his twin brother Julian, a wide receiver.

The Pioneers are also loaded on the defensive line, where the group average is 6-foot-2, 220 pounds.

For the first time in a while, Newbury Park should compete for the Marmonte League championship. The Panthers' freshman team was 8-2 last year and with the addition of talented transfer Mike Ash, they are favored to contend for the league title.

Newbury Park coach John Marsden isn't sure yet where he'll use Ash, but he is confident that the newcomer will play a significant role.

``He's got a lot of versatility so we'll probably use him at running back, receiver and linebacker,'' Marsden said. ``We'll see where he fits.''

Two players are competing for the quarterback job, so expect Cameron Merrill and Eric Sanford to both see time.

The top receivers are wideout Pat Du Ross and tight end Will Svitek Will Svitek (born January 8, 1982 in Prague, Czech Republic) is an American football player who currently plays tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs. Two other teams to watch are Agoura and Westlake.

The Chargers are unsettled at quarterback with Chris Denove and Brendan Mica in the hunt for the starting job.

The first-year head coach is excited about a talented offensive line featuring Jared Drake, David Rosenthal and Josh Hesketh. Tight end Nick Aiello should be a varsity star in the years ahead.

Westlake, a perennial power, is led by quarterback Scott Benkert, the nephew of varsity coach Jim Benkert.

Running back Tony Muna, Chris Catalano (wide receiver), Brad Morton (wide receiver), Craig Raimondi (offensive line and linebacker), Keith Holt (tackle) and Raddie Zlatkov (tackle) are all expected to play big roles.

``We expect to be fairly good in league although there will be competition from a number of other teams,'' said Warriors coach Larry Stonebraker.

The Scorpions' freshman team finished 1-9, although defensive end Brent Rose and linebacker Charles Bueker both enjoyed solid years. The starting quarterback is expected to be Aaron Tweet.
