The group of 32 has slowly dwindled to seven over the past two hours.

The remaining runners, who suffered silently up the steep 400-meter hill for the 20th time Tuesday, are the core of one of the nation's best high school cross country teams - Royal High of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. .

outs'' are one reason for the Highlanders' success.

The Royal boys' team, which won its first state title last season, is ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section Div. I preseason poll. The girls' team, which finished eighth in the state meet, is ranked No. 2.

Royal isn't the only school to have success with both teams. Many of the area's top cross-country programs consistently find their names near the top of the boys' and girls' rankings.

Six of the 11 area schools that qualified for the 2004 state meet sent both boys' and girls' teams to Fresno for the state championships. Six schools also have both teams ranked in the top 10 of their respective Southern Section divisions.

Most of the successful programs share several traits - room to run, the right coach and robust rosters.

Teams from the Foothill and Marmonte leagues, traditionally the area's strongest, are located in suburban areas surrounded by grassy foothills and dirt trails.

Oak Park, located in Ventura County, simply had to cross the street to host a meet Wednesday. The Eagles have won four state titles.

Birmingham of Lake Balboa, which has a good chance to win the boys' and girls' City titles, does not have that luxury. Head coach Scott King Scott Glenndale Martin King (born June 25, 1967 in Thunder Bay, Ontario) was a professional ice hockey goaltender. He played in only two National Hockey League games for the Detroit Red Wings, but is known for his great play for the Toledo Storm.  recreates the necessary terrain by sending his team through high grass and loose dirt to recreate the resistance of running uphill.

King's creativity shows the important role a coach plays. A lot of kids haven't run competitively before high school, so a good coach is usually given credit for turning potential into success.

King is 610-14 in dual meets in his 32-year career, the past 18 spent at Birmingham. Canyon has won 11 straight girls' Foothill titles and six consecutive boys' titles under 19-year head coach Dave DeLong. The Cowboys also won the 1995 girls' state Div. I title and 2001 boys' Div. I state title.

Royal didn't have enough runners for a varsity team In the United States and Canada and UK, varsity sports teams are the principal athletic teams representing a college, university, or high school or other secondary school. Such teams compete against the principal athletic teams at other colleges/universities, or in the case of  when Luce ran there in the early '90s. The boys' team has made three appearances at the state meet since he became head coach in 2001.
