Royal High School stepped up, big time.

Royal entered ranked No. 5, Mira Costa No. 4.

John Baxter (49 assists), Nick Flanigan (16 kills, seven blocks) and Marc Chafee (10 kills) led the way.

``I think this match let us know where we are as a team,'' Baxter said. ``It really helps our confidence.''

Royal set the tone early with effective blocking and solid teamwork (product, software, tool) Teamwork - A SASD tool from Sterling Software, formerly CADRE Technologies, which supports the Shlaer/Mellor Object-Oriented method and the Yourdon-DeMarco, Hatley-Pirbhai, Constantine and Buhr notations. .

``I'd say our blocking took them out of their game,'' Royal coach Bob Ferguson said. ``We made a jump (Thursday). We've been focused on this game for about a month.''

``We just came out and played very aggressively from the start,'' Flanigan said. ``We got a lot of confidence early on and we just went from there.''

Ferguson liked the way Royal defended the net and came together as a team.

``We just kept stopping them every time they attacked the net,'' he said. ``Plus, we hung with them, and outplayed them. It was all a team effort. A good team like Mira Costa does not just roll over. We were just more consistent, and that was the difference.''

Garrett Herzer added eight blocks for Royal.

It was the first time in three meetings since 1995 that Royal has defeated Mira Costa.

Mira Costa's only lead of the evening was a brief 8-7 advantage in the second game.

In the deciding game, the Highlanders surged to a 6-0 advantage.

Ferguson praised Baxter, his returning All-Southern Section setter setter: see sporting dog.
