ROYAL GETS DEFENSIVE; OFFENSE ALSO IN HIGH GEAR AGAINST VENTURA : ROYAL 10, VENTURA 5.

Byline: Heather Gripp Daily News Stff Writer

Royal High's high-scoring offense may be among the most potent in Southern Section boys' water polo water polo, swimming game encompassing features of soccer, football, basketball, and hockey. The object of the game is to maneuver, by head, feet, or hand, a leather-covered ball 27 to 28 in. , but Wednesday the defense proved even more effective as it shut down Ventura 10-5 in the Division IV semifinals.

``That's been our forte An application development system for enterprise client/server environments from Sun. It was folded into the Sun Studio compiler and tool suite, which is based on the open source Netbeans IDE. , our strength all season,'' Royal coach Steve Snyder said.

While the Highlanders offense took its time getting going, making just two of eight first-quarter shots, the defense shut out the host Cougars until early in the second period.

``We missed too many shots,'' Snyder said. ``We realized we had to be more patient.

``We have the luxury of a great goalie . . . We know he's going to block a high percentage of shots.''

With goalkeeper Garret Herzer (10 saves) anchoring the defense, the Highlanders offense went to work.

In contrast to a first half in which Jason Perry's three goals accounted for the entire Highlanders scoring, the second half saw several Royal players get in on the scoring spree.

David Radka's first of three goals broke a 3-3 tie early in the third quarter and the Highlanders pulled away.

``(Ventura) really kept the pressure on us offensively,'' Snyder said.

Radka noted another factor in the Highlanders' success.

``So far, all this season, the second half has been ours,'' Radka said. ``We totally dominate the second half with our conditioning.''

``Now that we're in the semifinals, the next two games are going to be who's in the best shape and who wants it more,'' Radka said.
