ROYAL DRUBBING GIVEN LIPMAN TIES REGION HOMER RECORD IN WIN OVER CANYON ROYAL 13, CANYON 2.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

CANYON COUNTRY - Brian Lipman's home run was just one of several big hits for the Royal High baseball team, and that's exactly what he likes to see.

Ever since Lipman stopped trying to carry the offense, the senior first baseman returned to his record-setting form and his teammates began providing support. Lipman hit his 33rd career home run Tuesday to tie the regional record established by Littlerock's Delwyn Young Delwyn Rudy Young (born June 30, 1982 in Los Angeles, California) is an outfielder in Major League Baseball who plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers. His teammates added 11 hits as the visiting Highlanders of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  defeated Canyon 13-2 in a Division II wild-card game that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

``Everybody's hitting the ball,'' said Lipman, who entered the week batting .542 and has a school-record 133 RBI RBI

Casey O'Quinn and Anthony Gallo both went 3 for 4, Nick Jewel went 2 for 2 with a home run and four RBI and Buzz Byer added a three-run double for Royal (17-11), which came on strongly in recent weeks to finish third in the Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. ``We all jelled as a team the last three games,'' Lipman said.

Lipman wasn't aware he was approaching the career home run record - which was 32 and held by Simi Valley's Scott Sharts until last week - until he read about it early in the season. He figured Highland's John Santor would be his closest competitor in the race for the record, but Young beat both of them. Young's season is over, but Lipman has at least one more game since the Highlanders advanced to Friday's first-round game at Del Rio Del Rio (rē`ō), city (1990 pop. 30,705), seat of Val Verde co., W Tex., on the Rio Grande opposite Ciudad Acuña, Mexico; founded 1868, inc. 1911.  League champion California of Whittier.

Royal already had a four-run lead by the time Lipman hit his 13th home run of season, a two-run shot to center in the fourth inning, to make it 8-2. He has homered in each of the past three games.

``When we were struggling early on, Lipman and O'Quinn felt they had to do everything,'' Royal coach Dan Maye said. ``They were trying to hit home runs and weren't willing to take the walks. They got out of being good hitters. When they were struggling, we talked to them and got them to be more patient.''

Another encouraging sign for the Highlanders is their pitching. Junior Dan Fisher recently joined the team after being academically ineligible and improved to 2-0 by pitching 2 2/3 shutout innings of relief.

dropped to 6-3 by giving up eight hits and eight runs in three-plus innings. The Cowboys (13-8-1) went through three pitchers in Royal's five-run fourth.

Justin Wayland had two of Canyon's seven hits.
