Royal Cruise Line A cruise line is a company that operates cruise ships. Cruise lines have a dual character; they are partly in the transportation business, and partly in the leisure entertainment business, a duality that carries down into the ships themselves, which have both a crew headed by the , the venerable San Francisco cruise company that was once voted the best in the business, is being shut down, industry sources said.

About half of the company's 120 employees were laid off last week and the remaining workers will be let go as the cruise line phases out operations during the next three or four months.

Royal Cruise's cash-strapped parent, Kloster Cruise Ltd., the Norwegian parent, had been negotiating with Foster City Development Corp. during the past several weeks to either acquire Royal Cruise or several of its ships. However, sources said, the two sides were never able to come to final terms and talks collapsed.

Royal Cruise Line's offices have been closed and few details were available. There is no word yet on what will happen to travelers who have booked passage on Royal ships. But company officials say the line's four ships will scatter. Two will be sold. Two will be redeployed in Kloster's only surviving line, Norwegian Cruise Line Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is a company operating cruise ships, headquartered in Miami, Florida. It is most well known for its Freestyle Cruising, which means that there are no set times or seating arrangements for meals, nor is formal attire required. .
