ROYAL'S DIAMOND, LASZLO TRY TO END DROUGHT IN WATER POLO SENIORS HOPE TO END CAREERS BY LEADING TEAM TO A TITLE.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Tyler Diamond and Nick Laszlo will leave their mark on the Royal High water polo water polo, swimming game encompassing features of soccer, football, basketball, and hockey. The object of the game is to maneuver, by head, feet, or hand, a leather-covered ball 27 to 28 in.  program before the season is finished.

How the senior team captains will be remembered has yet to be determined. Diamond and Laszlo would like to end their careers with a Southern Section title.

There's also the possibility that they could become the first players to go through the program without winning a league title in the past two decades under coach Steve Snyder.

``We don't want to say these guys are losers,'' Diamond said. ``Knowing we're the only guys who haven't won a league championship is going to leave a bad taste in our mouth. Royal is known for winning and when we don't, it makes us look bad.''

Royal (16-5, 5-0) looks to be on the right track in the Marmonte League, which has five teams are ranked among the top 10 in Southern Section Division IV. The second-ranked Highlanders beat Calabasas on Thursday to finish the first round of league undefeated.

``This year all the league matches are going to be big,'' said Snyder, now in his 25th year coaching at Royal. ``It's been a combination of the league getting better with stronger youth programs and coaching.''

This fall has been Royal's turn to shine after graduating only one starter from its 2003 league runner-up and Southern Section Division IV quarterfinalist team. All-Southern Section players Diamond and Laszlo have led the movement.

Diamond and Laszlo, however, said that this year's team has been more cohesive than ones in past seasons. On Sundays, the players try to get together for surfing in Malibu.

``When something gets out of hand, we try to calm them down,'' Laszlo said. ``It's like a brotherly team. Everybody listens to each other whether it's a freshman telling a senior what to do or a sophomore telling us. Everybody has a certain job.''

In addition to his play, Laszlo also has served as an inspiration for Royal this season. He continues to play while recovering from a bout of mononucleosis mononucleosis /mono·nu·cle·o·sis/ (-noo?kle-o´sis) excess of mononuclear leukocytes (monocytes) in the blood.

``I am still not feeling 100 percent, but I am feeling a lot stronger,'' Laszlo said. ``On the days, I don't feel 100 percent, I think about working my tail and butt off this summer to be the best that I can be.''

For Diamond, his future lies not in the pool but on the baseball diamond. Diamond, a utility player, would like to pursue baseball in college rather than water polo.

His older brother, Ryan, a 2003 Royal graduate, played water polo at Royal. His younger brother Wiki is aware of the following uses of "'Younger Brother":

Diamond, a utility player who played every position for the Royal baseball team except pitcher and catcher, said he plays water polo primarily for conditioning for baseball and to help his throwing.

For now, a Marmonte League water polo title are in his immediate plans.
