Royal High of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  coach Bill Dishon has become a popular guy around town the past couple of weeks.

``I go out to the store wearing my Royal hat, and people I don't even know are coming up to congratulate me,'' said Dishon, in his third year as the Highlanders' head coach. ``My phone never stops ringing anymore.''

Dishon said he's even been getting calls from long-lost relatives who have become caught up in Royal's run to the Southern Section Div. I softball championship game, tonight at 7:30 p.m. against Valencia at Barber Park in Irvine.

The story's the same in Valencia.

There was a huge crowd at the Vikings' semifinal victory Wednesday over Mater Dei Mater Dei is Latin for "Mother of God", referring to the Virgin Mary. The term has been used to name various institutions, often Catholic, including:
  • Mater Dei Catholic College, Wagga Wagga
  • Mater Dei College, Western Australia

Santa Ana (sän'tä ä`nä), city (1993 pop. 129,873), W El Salvador. It is the second largest city in the country and the commercial and processing center for a sugarcane, coffee, and cattle region.
. The sound of cell phones ringing filled the air as those who couldn't make the trip down to Thorton Park in Santa Ana called for updates.

Royal and Valencia are playing for a section title for the first time in each school's history, making tonight's game the biggest softball game either has ever been part of. Two area teams have never played each other for the Div. I title, and only one area team - Simi Valley in 1983 - has won a Div A DIV Associate of Divinity . I title.

This is the seventh time two area teams have played each other for a section softball title, but the six previous times it happened in smaller divisions.

Royal is ranked No. 1 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports. Valencia is No. 2.

, you might expect the players' nerves to be frayed.

Not so, said Valencia senior pitcher Courtney Baughman (11-0), who will start tonight's game.

``We're all just having a blast this year,'' she said. ``Everything is fun. We even like shagging Shagging may refer to:

Valencia coach Donna Lee Donna Lee is a bebop jazz standard itself based on the chord changes of the traditional jazz standard "(Back Home Again in) Indiana".[1] It is named after the now-obscure bassist Donna Lee. , who played for a City Section championship in 1980 as a senior at Taft High of Woodland Hills, said her team is just enjoying the moment.

``I was the kind of player who played hard and left everything on the field,'' Lee said. ``If you do that and you lose, you can feel good. It just wasn't your day. I just want the girls to play well and give it everything they have.''

Lee said she made the decision to start Baughman, who has a 19-1 career record, instead of sophomore sensation Jordan Taylor, who has a 51-inning scoreless streak, because of Baughman's experience.

``She's a senior, and we're going to put the ball in her hands,'' Lee said. ``Our seniors have led us here.''

Valencia's four seniors - Baughman, Breanne Javier, Whitney Lowe and Mallory DiFatta - have led the team, but talented underclassmen such as Taylor, Kristen Aidem, Jessica Spigner, Roni LaVal and Torrie Anderson have kept the team loose.

``We're very supportive of each other,'' said Spigner, a freshman who worked her way into the lineup about a month ago. ``Everyone on this team has contributed.''

Royal is led by junior pitchers Jessi Waers (12-1) and Becca Heteniak (16-1), senior shortstop Andi Ramirez (.464) and senior third baseman third baseman
