PALMDALE - Palmdale residents will be able to check out books without going to the library, starting early next year.

Aiming to reach patrons who might not otherwise visit the downtown libraries, the city plans to spend $134,000 for a bookmobile able to hold about 3,000 books, tapes and videos.

``We have a 100-square-mile city,'' said Mayor Jim Ledford. ``We want to access points east and west and get into the schools and neighborhoods. We want to engage the neighborhoods.''

The 28-foot-long vehicle should arrive in February or March. The city is hiring two full-time staffers for the bookmobile.

The city plans to eventually build library annexes on both its east and west sides, officials said.

A pair of library construction projects are slated to begin this month. To accommodate the bookmobile, the Palmdale Youth Library will be expanded by 481 square feet, with the additions of a loading dock and office space.

The main library will be expanded by 300 square feet with the addition of a vestibule vestibule /ves·ti·bule/ (ves´ti-bul) a space or cavity at the entrance to a canal.vestib´ular

The two construction projects are projected to cost approximately $172,000. Both are to be completed in early 2004.

At a news conference announcing the bookmobile and expansion plans, city officials also showed off the new library card, decorated dec·o·rate

The city buys a new supply of cards about every three years. With the latest purchase, city officials thought it was time for a change from the old white cards.

City officials also promoted a library book fair, a fund-raiser to be held from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday through Monday at the Barnes & Noble bookstore, 39228 10th St. W.

Patrons can purchase books, magazines, videos, DVDs and CDs at the bookstore during this fund-raiser.

Book-fair vouchers can be picked up ahead of time at the Palmdale Main Library and the Palmdale Youth Library.
