ROUT RESULT? VICTORY ROUTE.

Byline: Billy Witz Staff Writer

No matter how badly UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles
UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University)
UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX
gets crushed on the court, nobody can crush the Bruins' confidence. When the Bruins are routed, it rolls off them like water off coach Steve Lavin's hair.

Their stunning 79-73 upset of No. 1-ranked Stanford on Saturday, coming on the heels of a 29-point loss to Cal, is merely the latest example. In Lavin's five years as head coach, the Bruins have lost seven regular-season games by 18 or more points. They've responded by winning the following game six times. Often they've followed up the one-sided losses with modest winning streaks (see chart).

``It always goes back to coach (Pete) Newell and coach (John) Wooden,'' said Lavin, citing the two legends he considers mentors. ``You can't get too high after wins and you can't get too low after losses. You want to maintain that even-keel buzz saw.

``Contrary to what some people think, we're not the only team in the country losing games. Sometimes you're going to lose big. The key is you can't overreact o·ver·re·act

Said assistant coach Michael Holton Michael (Mike) David Holton (born August 4 1961, in Seattle, Washington) is a retired American professional basketball player. He played college basketball at UCLA from 1979–83, and was selected in the third round of the 1983 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors, . ``There never has been a sky-is-falling mentality (on the team). We live in the response. What is it going to be? How are you going to react?''

--Practice makes perfect: The Bruins said Friday's practice, a much more vigorous workout than their usual on a day between games, was a big help.

``We just had to blow it out and practice hard,'' forward Jason Kapono said. ``We had to get all the frustration and nastiness out of our system and strap it up and get after it (Saturday).

``We came to play. There was no nervousness or thinking too much. Each player can in and played with heart.''
