Thompson won the women's 200-meter freestyle, her third victory in less than 24 hours, and Rouse won the men's 100 backstroke.

Allison Wagner, another American considered a top contender for a medal in the 200 individual medley in Atlanta, finished third in the event - behind Quance and Lea Loveless.

Cristina Teuscher, who will compete for the United States in the women's 200 and 400 freestyle as well as two relays in the Olympics, won the 400. She also won the 800 freestyle Thursday on the first day of the Santa Clara meet.

Other winners included Loveless in the women's 100 backstroke.

Thompson, who won the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly on Friday, got out to a big early lead in the 200 freestyle and finished in 2 minutes, 00.05 seconds - just 0.07 seconds off her career best.

Thompson will compete in the 50 freestyle today.

Rouse, a former Stanford teammate of Thompson, got off to a bad start but still won in 56.39 seconds, edging compatriot com·pa·tri·ot

Payton added to Dream Team: Seattle SuperSonics guard Gary Payton was selected for the U.S. Olympic basketball team, replacing injured Glenn Robinson.

Distance champ fails at trials: Two-time world 5,000-meter champion Ismail Kirui failed to make the Kenyan Olympic team after finishing eighth in the trials in Nairobi.

Kirui, a gold medalist in the 5,000 at the 1993 and 1995 World Championships, was timed in 14 minutes, 10.41 seconds.

Tom Nyariki was the surprise winner of the 5,000 in 13:28.30. Paul Bitok, the silver medalist at the 1992 Barcelona Games, ewas second in 13:29.25, and 1995 World Championship bronze medalist Shem Kororia was third.
