Chaminade High School's Ryan Hamill won the home-run derby at the Gael Classic baseball tournament Friday in Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States. , hitting four home runs to beat 16 other players.

The closest players to Hamill, who has signed with Nevada Las Vegas, had two home runs.

Pepperdine 11-7, San Francisco 3-4: Rob Reid went 5 for 8 with two doubles a home run and four RBI, David Matranga went 3 for 8 with a home run and four RBI and Mark Lopez went 4 for 6 as the Waves (19-15, 7-0) swept the Dons (14-18, 2-5) in a West Coast Conference doubleheader at Malibu.

Mark Mirizzi, Wes Rachels and Robb Gorr added two hits each for USC, which outhit the Sun Devils 17-13. Jason Brown and Mirizzi homered for the Trojans.

The conference participates in the NCAA's Division I.  with a 15-9, 4-15, 10-15, 15-10, 18-16 come-from-behind win over the Cougars (16-3, 12-3) in Provo, Utah.

College tennis

No. 3 UCLA 9, Washington 0: The Bruins' Kati Kocsis defeated Katherine Costain 6-4, 6-3 in No. 1 singles as UCLA (10-3, 5-1) posted its seventh consecutive win by defeating Washington (8-8, 1-2) in a Pac-10 Conference match in Westwood.
