The stocky, perpetually smiling Valencia resident scored back-to-back wins over Dan Arroyo (3 and 2) and Ed Cuff (1-up) to earn a berth in today's 36-hole final of the 86th state amateur tournament.

Gore, 22, will face Cinderella entry Scott Watson, the 25-year-old UC Davis student whose latest upset victim was tournament medalist Tim Hogarth of Chatsworth. Watson came from behind to win five straight holes on the back nine and secure a 4 and 3 semifinal decision over Hogarth, who had broken a 44-year-old tournament record by shooting 6-under par 138 to win the medal-play phase by eight strokes.

Watson, who survived a seven-man playoff to earn one of the last berths in the 32-man match-play field, holed a bunker shot for an eagle on the 20th hole to win his match-play opener over 1982 state amateur champ Gary Vanier. Near record for Murphy: Bob Murphy fired a near-perfect, 8-under-par 64 - one off the tournament record - to take a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Nationwide Championship senior tournament at Alpharetta, Ga.

Murphy, seeking his 12th senior tour victory, was as hot as the 90-degree temperature, carding eight birdies without a bogey over the 6,777-yard, par-72 Golf Club of Georgia Lakeside Course.

Garrido leads German Open: Spain's Ignacio Garrido, seeking his first tour victory, shot a 4-under-par 67 Friday and took a two-stroke lead at 132 halfway through the Volvo German Open at Stuttgart.
