moment was a double steal gimmick play that resulted in Jon Brewster's steal of home to make it 3-0.

The play began with Brewster breaking for the plate. The runner at first, Haskell, started for second but conveniently stumbled. Rather than try to retire the lead runner, Ramos flung the ball toward first base. Haskell got up and kept the attention of the 49ers (3-3) long enough to let Brewster score.

``Well ... he tripped,'' said a very unconvincing USC coach Mike Gillespie when asked about the validity of Haskell's fall. ``We took advantage of the inexperience of a freshman. I don't think you'll be able to do that play against that guy, maybe not even next week.''

After 6-0 and 7-1 losses to Long Beach State, the Trojans (2-2) were willing to try anything. Starting pitcher Fraser Dizard (1-0) threw a solid 5 2/3 innings, and eight starters hit safely. USC had 12 total hits and all nine either drove in or scored a run.

Kelly, who entered the final at-bat 0 for 10 on the year, sent a 1-1 pitch over the right-center-field fence to give the victory to freshman left-hander Paul Coleman (1-0), who made his college debut in the top of the ninth.
