ROUNDUP: ISLAND FASHION'S WIN IS 5TH IN 11 CAREER RACES.

Byline: Jerry Antonucci Special to the Daily News

ARCADIA - Trainer Marcelo Polanco elected last weekend to pass on the El Encino Stakes The El Encino Stakes is a race for thoroughbred race horses held in the United States. The El Encino Stakes, run at Santa Anita Park each year, is open to fillies and mares, age three and up, willing to race one and one-sixteenth miles on the dirt.  with 4-year-old filly Island Fashion in favor of the Santa Monica Handicap The Santa Monica Handicap is a race for thoroughbred race horses run at a distance of seven furlongs on the dirt at Santa Anita Park. The Grade I race is open to fillies and mares age, three and up, and offers a purse of $250,000.  on Sunday.

The choice seems to have made sense because the El Encino was a Grade II 1 1/16-mile race with a purse of $150,000, and the Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. Tourism and retailing are important, and the city has motion-picture, biotechnology, and software industries.  at 7 furlongs is rated Grade I with $250,000 up for grabs.

Polanco rested a lot easier Sunday night Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, was an NBC late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists.  after Island Fashion, the 3-2 second choice ridden by jockey Kent Desormeaux Kent J. Desormeaux (born February 27, 1970, in Maurice, Vermilion Parish, Louisiana) is an American thoroughbred horse racing Hall of Fame jockey who holds the U.S. record for most races won in a single year. , won a hard-fought stretch battle over 18-1 long shot Buffythecenterfold to score a three- quarter-length victory in 1:21 1/5.

``Running in a Grade II against 4-year-olds, we weren't going to prove nothing,'' Polanco said of passing on the El Encino. ``Running against the best fillies in the country in a Grade I, that's when you see what you have.''

Got Koko rallied from sixth and last to finish third, and 6-5 favorite Sightseek was a lackluster fourth. Last year, Sightseek was second to Affluent in the Santa Monica 'Cap.

Princess V and Buffythecenterfold immediately dashed for the lead and sizzled head-and-head through early fractions of 21 4/5, 44 and 1:08 2/5.

At the top of the stretch, Island Fashion made it three horses across the track, then got the best of Buffythecenterfold in the final half-furlong.

``I told Kent the track seemed like it was fast in the earlier races and if another horse wanted to take the lead to let it go,'' Polanco said. ``She can be placed anywhere.''

Island Fashion paid $5 for her fifth victory in 11 career races. The $150,000 first-place check for winning the Santa Monica gives her $1,262,970 in lifetime earnings.

--Congaree's 2004 debut planned: After Congaree worked 6 furlongs in 1:12 3/5 last week, trainer Bob Baffert said he is leaning toward the $250,000 San Antonio Handicap The San Antonio Handicap is a race for thoroughbred horses run at Santa Anita Park each year. The race is open to horses, age three and up, willing to race one and one-eighth miles on the dirt. The Grade II event offers a purse of $250,000.

on Saturday for the horse's 2004 debut.

``If he runs, (jockey) Jerry Bailey will ride him,'' Baffert said.
