ROUNDUP: FAITH BAPTIST PROVES TO BE LIVELY WILD CARD.

Junior outside hitter Justine Manalaspas had a team-high six kills, and teammates Monica Borja and Jenna Fuller added four kill apiece Saturday night as host Faith Baptist of Canoga Park defeated New Roads of Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. Senior outside hitter Noel Hagman had a game-high 11 kills along with seven assists and five digs, and Sophia Lopes added five kills and three assists for Harbor League champion New Roads (14-4).

Faith Baptist rallied to erase New Roads leads of 9-7 and 12-9 in the second game to earn the sweep.

ln Thursday's first round, Faith Baptist defeated No. 4 seed and Desert Mountain League champion Lone Pine 8-15, 15-12, 11-15, 15-6, 15-11 at Lone Pine.

``We just tried to keep fighting and keep trying, even though they were really good,'' said Viewpoint senior Krystal Dry, who had five digs. ``We knew they had some really tall, really talented people.''

The closest game was the first as Viewpoint overcame a 7-0 Chadwick lead to get within two points at 13-11. The teams then traded nine sideouts before Chadwick won the final two points.

Grace Brethren, which went undefeated in Alpha League play, made a big stand at the end of game one, holding on to win after the visiting Owls had erased a 12-1 Lancers lead to tie the game at 13.

La Reina (21-3) cruised in winning the first game, but Valley Christian took the next game with a six-point run toward the end.

La Reina controlled the third game like it had the first, but again Valley Christian rallied, overcoming a five-point deficit to win game four.

Fithian finished with 14 kills and 20 digs, Erica O'Connor had 12 kills, Breezy Ward 11 kills and Katie Kellogg had seven kills and 32 assists.
