 softball pitcher Amanda Freed Amanda Louise Freed (born December 26, 1979 in Fountain Valley, California) is an American softball player. She attended UCLA where she played softball. The Bruins have one of the best softball traditions in the nation, having won 10 of 24 championships.  had almost five weeks worth of unused competitive fire to burn Friday afternoon, which was bad news for Cal State Northridge.

It was a cruel ending for the Matadors, who beat Fresno State 3-1 earlier Friday to stay alive in the double-elimination tournament A double-elimination tournament is a competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament's championship upon having lost two games or matches. .

Farnworth scattered six hits in the complete-game victory over the Bulldogs, but the Matadors had to come right back and face the Bruins, the second-ranked team in the country.

In Friday's other game, Granada Hills High product Sandra Durazo pitched a one-hitter in San Diego State's 1-0 victory over Wisconsin. At 3 p.m. today, the Badgers will play the loser of the UCLA-San Diego State game.

The winners of today's games meet Sunday in the regional final at 12:30 p.m.

In baseball:

--Gonzaga 7, Pepperdine 6:The pieces were coming together for Pepperdine to sweep Gonzaga out of the West Coast Conference championship.

Gonzaga trailed by five runs in the ninth inning in the opener of the best-of-three series at Eddy D. Field Eddy D. Field is home of the Pepperdine University Waves' baseball team located in Malibu, California. It was originally built in 1973, but underwent renovations in 1980 and 1999. It now holds up to 2,000 spectators, all box seats.  Stadium in Malibu. But within a span of 15 minutes, the Bulldogs had posted a remarkable comback.

Gonzaga (28-25), whose postseason chances disintegrate without the WCC's automatic bid, can secure its NCAA Regional spot with a win in the second game at 1 p.m. today.

Beating 13-game winner Noah Lowry Noah Ryan Lowry (born October 10 1980 in Ventura, California) is a left-handed starting pitcher for the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball.

With only average velocity on his fastball, Lowry was not widely regarded as a top prospect, and did not make Baseball
 today is a difficult assignment. But the Bulldogs believe in magic given Friday's ninth-inning chaos.

Haren rallied to get two outs, though second baseman Danny Garcia bobbled away another potential double play. Senior Jay Adams was summoned to the mound with the bases loaded and the Waves leading 6-3.

Brian Munhall's dribbler down the third-base line should have ended the game. But Adams' toss home bounced off catcher Rock Mills' glove to score two runs.

Adams' next pitch was lined into right for a go-ahead two-run single by Crespi High of Encino and Pierce College product Barry Matthews.

Gonzaga closer Eric Everson's 1-2-3 ninth preserved the victory and left the Waves (39-16) in a haze.

Matthews (9-2), despite eight respectable innings against Pepperdine, appeared headed for a loss until Gonzaga's ninth-inning rally.

Also on Friday, Pepperdine juniors Dan Haren and Noah Lowry were named the West Coast Conference's player and pitcher of the year, respectively.

Haren, a pitcher/designated hitter, went 10-3 with a 2.41 earned-run average and batted .313 with five homers and 42 RBI during the regular season. Lowry (13-1, 1.62) ranks second nationally in wins.

--Chapman 7, Cal Lutheran 4: The Kingsmen were eliminated by the Panthers in the West Regional baseball tournament at Hart Park in Orange. Third-seeded Cal Lutheran (27-15) committed a season-high five errors, enabling top-seeded Chapman (35-8) to score seven unearned runs against losing pitcher Jason Hirsh (7-3).

In women's tennis:

--Trojans fall: The 10th-seeded USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  women's tennis team (20-8) ended its 2001 NCAA Tournament run with a 4-0 loss to second-ranked and defending champion Georgia in a quarterfinal match at the Lincoln Tennis Center in Athens, Ga.

The Trojans are 0-6 all-time against the Bulldogs. Georgia recorded its fourth consecutive 4-0 victory in the tournament. USC sophomores Jewel Peterson (singles and doubles), Maureen Diaz (singles alternate) and Tiffany Brymer (doubles) now await the start of the NCAA Individual and Doubles Championship, May 21-25.
